Dr. Suzann Wang: Hi! Welcome to my very first video blog. Today, I am going to be talking about thyroid, weight gain, and adrenal fatigue. This came up this week with a patient of mine who have had problems dealing with her thyroid medication. She had heart palpitations, swellingness, couldn't sleep. She had a lot of problems dealing with her thyroid medicine. She tried a few of them. She had Fibroid as well as Armour thyroid, more of a natural supplement for her thyroid. I wanted to make this video blog because it's easier for me to describe to you why there is some of my patients might have trouble dealing with thyroid medications or thyroid supplementation.
This is well understood by most of the medical communities, so I thought it would be easier for me to talk about it. So, the thyroid and adrenals are very, very well linked. Often times, people who have thyroid condition also have adrenal fatigue and often times, adrenal fatigue is mistaken for a thyroid condition. Sometimes the thyroid is only moderately low, but often doctors will try and do thyroid supplementation or thyroid medications to help with the fatigue or weight gain that a lot people are experiencing. But what a lot of doctors don't understand is that adrenals are -- if your adrenals are really weak, supplementing with thyroid early on, it will make you feel very edgy and over-amped, just feel -- some people just feel terrible and they have trouble sleeping, they feel hyperthyroid heart palpitations and things like that.
It seems like you can't tolerate thyroid medication, but it is not true. What actually happening is that your adrenals are not strong enough to support the stronger thyroid medication. So, my suggestion always is to make sure that your doctor treats you or at least test you for adrenal fatigue at the same time if you have a thyroid or a weight condition. This is really important because thyroid and adrenal both can lead to weight gain and extreme fatigue and sometimes they both ductile into each other or sometimes you just have an adrenal issue. So, next time we'll be talking little bit more about how your doctor should test your thyroid for a very complete understanding of how your thyroid is functioning because most doctors will test just for the thyroid stimulating hormone, which is not sufficient for a lot of people. In those cases, you'll also experience perhaps some failure of your centroid to work. So stay tuned and thank you for listening and I will look forward to sharing more of our information with you. Have a great day.
