You can play bass with your fingers using a rest stroke which sort of works like this. Or you can, like I do, play with a pick. So, you would actually just --. Or if you wanted to play a funk, you could use what's called the slap technique whereas you hit the string with your thumb and then you find your octave which would be essentially of the same note, which would be in your box formation right here.
So, here I would be playing an A, like so and then I would pick up my other A using my finger. So, you can see, it's the same note but just on a different octave, so you can essentially do things like this and that's how a lot of those guys play one of those fancy licks.
