What animal walks like a human, swims like a fish and makes a sound like a donkey? African penguins, of course!
Well most people think of penguins as only living in Antarctica. But these penguins live up the southern coast of Africa, which is why they are called African penguin. They look like they’re wearing tuxedos. I think I love their dress. They’re also called jackass penguins because they make a sound kind of like a donkey.
They can swim up to 15 miles per hour. The fastest human swimmers can only go about four and a half miles an hour. That’s really fast. They have to be fast enough to catch their food. African penguins are carnivores. They love sardines, anchovies, squid and other crustaceans. We’ll bring this vitamin stuff into this fish which I’m going to give to the penguins.
They don’t have teeth either. They swallow the fish whole and have a gizzard that break down the fish to digest.
You won’t think that feathers and __ would go together very well. But penguins have a lot more feathers than other birds. This helps them stay dry. They spread oil on their feathers from a special gland near their tail. This helps them stay waterproof.
Penguins are social animals. That means they love to hang out with other penguins. A group of penguins is called a colony. They carve out a burrow by ___ guano. In other words, they make houses out of poop.
By removing guano for fertilizer, humans are destroying the natural habitat of these African penguins.
