Nicole Tomlinson: If you have ever fasted or heard about fasting you will know it takes great discipline. Fasting is a common Buddhist custom practiced to cleanse the body and will self discipline. It is an exercise in mind and body. We will learn about a safe and effective drink, called Master Cleanse, to both purify the body and lose weight.
I am here with the Juice Maestro, Keith Wahrer of the Daily Juice, we are going to talk a little bit about Master Cleanse. Hi Keith!
Keith Wahrer: Hi!
Nicole Tomlinson: So briefly, what is a fast?
Keith Wahrer: A fast is a period of time that someone will subject themselves to where they stop eating food of any kind and consume only liquids.
Nicole Tomlinson: So that doesn't necessarily mean just water. You can consume juices?
Keith Wahrer: Yes, you could do a juice fast, master cleanse is a popular juice fast.
Ivy Minnis: Well, when I first started the master cleanse, it was a little difficult the first time because I was in the mindset of thinking I had to eat every meal and just carrying that mindset with me.
Bob Winters: Fasting for one day it really showed me how much that I thought about food. And how much food is a part of our lives.
Keith Wahrer: The idea with the master cleanse is that your body is getting the bare minimum that it needs to survive for ten days. The benefits of fasting come from not eating. Because when you stop eating, your body naturally goes into a cycle of detoxification and cleansing.
Ivy Minnis: After the first couple of days it is sort of like you are in a different realm. It is like you are in a different mindset than everyone else. Like you see food around you, but you don't really want to eat it.
Bob Winters: Lot of times people feel victim to their diet that their diet controls them. Because the body becomes habit - it becomes like a habit to eat certain foods.
Nicole Tomlinson: During the master cleanse, during the ten day fast I drink a gallon of this a day, how much of this do I drink a day?
Keith Wahrer: Yes, on average I would say a gallon a day is a good amount.
Nicole Tomlinson: Wow! That's a lot of liquid.
Keith Wahrer: It seems like a lot, it's amazing though, when you're not eating it goes pretty quickly. You do want to be sure to have it with you at all times. Because you want to be sure to stay hydrated, and you burn those calories that are in the maple syrup pretty much immediately.
Bob Winters: On a master cleanse you can really do it any amount of days you feel to do it. It's recommended to do ten days.
Nicole Tomlinson: I have heard of celebrities who have used this in order to lose weight for upcoming film roles. Do you recommend it for weight loss?
Keith Wahrer: You probably will lose some weight, but you will probably gain it right back afterwards if you begin eating your regular diet. I recommend using the fast as a way of rebooting and changing your diet from that point on, your diet can change.
Ivy Minnis: Whenever I did the master cleanse and I did fasting, I actually had more energy, I didn't feel bad, so it was pretty good.
Nicole Tomlinson: It seems like if you're going to make the commitment to go ten days without eating. You probably have to be in a good place to restart your life in general.
Keith Wahrer: It's an amazing thing, when you fast it brings an awareness of your diet. You become aware of what it is that you're creating. So fasting is really good for learning about yourself.
Bob Winters: I have done the master cleanse several times. And I have done it with incorporating other elements in it. Spirulina, Himalayan Crystal Salt.
Nicole Tomlinson: And these are the ingredients for the master cleanse right here?
Keith Wahrer: What we have, this is maple syrup. With the maple syrup we get the sugars that we need for our energy.
Nicole Tomlinson: We have Grade B maple syrup, lemon juice. How much lemon do we use?
From a gallon of water we take out about 20 ounces of that water and then we are going to put in about 11 ounces of maple syrup, 8 ounces of lemon juice, and we use about a teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
Nicole Tomlinson: Alright, well, before I go over the edge, I am going to see if I can actually stomach this. See what it tastes like. That's a big glass. Oh, that cayenne is really spicy. Right there at the very end, but it's actually pretty good. It is an interesting combination to put cayenne pepper and maple syrup together.
Keith Wahrer: It's kind of a spicy lemonade.
Nicole Tomlinson: So I bet you after ten days you really start to like this.
Keith Wahrer: Like it or hate it.
Nicole Tomlinson: Yeah, everybody has their own.
Keith Wahrer: Well, you get tired of the same thing after ten days, but it's not so much about liking it. It's about doing it for your health.
Nicole Tomlinson: Well, thank you so much for telling us about fasting.
Keith Wahrer: My pleasure!
Nicole Tomlinson: It's a great way to purify the body, but please consult your physician before you decide to begin one.
