Hi this is Lars with Clean Air Gardening and today I am going to tell you about the Brill Luxus 38 and the Luxus 33. This is a 38 right here that I have, the 33 is very similar except that it is a little bit narrower. It has a 33 centimeter wide cut whereas this mower has a 38 centimeter wide cut, 38 centimeters is about 15.5 inches. This Bill mower is made in Germany. It weighs about 17 pounds. So look, I am lifting it up with one finger here. It has a cutting range that goes from 14 millimeters to 45 millimeters and in inches that is about 0.7 inches it is a little bit under an inch to 1.8 inches, it is the maximum cut, which is right around you know, for all practical purposes that is about 2 inches. So if you want to keep your grass super high, like a 3-inch cut or something like that, I recommend going with the Scott’s classic instead which does have a 3-inch maximum cut. The only thing that you want to avoid with the Brill is if you got Zoysia, Bermuda or Saint Augustine grasses, they don’t tend to be very well with the Brill. If are at the northern half of the country, usually you are going to do really well with the Brill or if you have Fescue or Rye or some kind of a grass that is not a San Augustine, Bermuda or Zoysia, you are typically going to do great with a Brill. It has five blades, they are flame hardened, welded steel blades. So the other cool thing about this Brill is that it is actually a silent cut design, which means that the blade is not going to scrape against the cutter bar. Instead it is going to miss the cutter bar by just less than a millimeter so it is sort of cutting the grass like scissors. Since there is no metal on metal contact, the blades its hardened steel blades, you can go probably a decade before you ever are going to have to bother with sharpening or any thing like that. Really, you just adjust the Brill instead of sharpening it, you just want to make sure that you always have that blade where it is missing by just less than a millimeter and it is really quite a simple adjustment. There are two bolts right here. They are spring loaded bolts that hold the cutter bar in place and to adjust them you are just going to need an adjustable wrench and what I did, the easiest way to keep these things adjusted is, you just tighten the bolt down until you hear a clicking when you spin the reel. Because then you are having metal on metal contact and then you just ease off, just to tag when it is no longer clicking and your blades are going to be perfectly adjusted. So if after two or three years, it feels like the mower is not cutting as well as it used to be, it is probably because you just need to do this quick adjustment that takes about two minutes.
The Brill, it is easy to adjust the cutting height. All you do is, there are two of these orange handles, one on each side. You just loosen them and then you get the height where you want it. Make sure it matches on both sides and tighten it back and then you are done. As far as maintenance goes the only real thing that you need to do with this is every once in a while if you get like a silicone, spray a lubricant, you can typically pick that up for $2.00 a can at any hardware store. Just spray off the blades every once in a while. It has sealed bearings so you don’t have to worry about the bearings really. Its got a plastic wheel so there is no rust or anything like that. So as long as you keep those blades sort of sprayed off, heavily a couple of months or something like that, that is really the only maintenance that this mower requires. That is the Brill Luxus 38 and the Luxus 33. They are great mowers. I totally recommend if you have a small yard, you should switch to a real mower. Why don’t you give them a try.
