Dr. Travis Stork: Modern medicine changes minute by minute. So today, we're showing you some of the newest advances that you may want to ask your own doctor about. Now, you've probably been eying this massive robot since the very beginning of the show. It's called the CyberKnife. It uses cutting-edge technology to zap away life-threatening tumors.
Fernando: I am a machinist at an aerospace company, and I thought I had a smudge on my glasses. I took them off to clean them and I noticed that the smudge was still there. They sent me to an eye doctor to have my eyes checked. They couldn't find anything wrong. Then I went to see a neurologist. He said you've got a tumor. If don't have surgery for this tumor, I would go blind.
Male Speaker: When Fernando presented his original tumor, this whole section was removed neurosurgically, and now we're left with this section down here. So we're going to go after this part of the tumor right here using the CyberKnife. So our whole goal is to give you these five treatments to get a well-defined targeted dose to this tumor so that we can preserve your vision.
Male Speaker: So go ahead and have a seat right here. Your head is going up this way. So here's your mask that we made for you earlier. It's specifically for you. Make sure that you don't move at all. You breathe okay in there?
Fernando: Yeah.
Male Speaker: Good! Mr. Lopez, just hold nice and still for us, we'll take care of the rest, okay?
Male Speaker: What we're looking at on this end of the screen is a digitally reconstructed radiograph and the robot is going to track them in real-time and then the robot will go to its first position and fire a beam.
Male Speaker: So we've got about 241 beams that are entering and exiting, but the thing that they all have in common is that they overlap just on the tumor, and that's where we're able to really stunt the growth of this tumor so that it won't grow and become a problem for Fernando's vision in the future.
