Hi, I’m Bruce Naylor your Frugal Tech. Keeping your business secure is a huge job. And today there’s more ways to mishandle the information, data, more bad guys out there than ever, ever before and to add to this next you know a lot of businesses are now communicating with their customers be at their blogs, sites such as Linked In, Facebook, Twitter all these sort of things, and maybe you’re hiring or have an employees who actively used these services everyday in their personal life.
The problem can happen though is when there’s a mixed if you will between personal things going on and business thing is going on as well. Now there are tools out there that enable you to link your linked in account, your Facebook account, your Twitter account and all these things, so in and out of it self it becomes like this rolling kind of blog if you will and keeping the personal information separate from business information can be a real challenging.
In fact, it can actually, possibly lead to potential security bridge. Surely, we don’t want employees passing the information around be at the Twitter when that might be linked to the company’s Facebook account or so forth.
So some IT departments are getting very aggressive and basically blocking the Twitter link and Facebook type URLs. Now look that’s kind of a real Draconian way to handle things. The reality is, is that I used these tools here at our small business and more and more companies are using this as well not only in their personal life or in our professional life, and it only makes sense. It’s a great way to communicate with your customers, vendors, and get that interaction with your company.
So I don’t believe that the Draconian method is really the way to go. It’s really about and like I said this so many times when it comes to network security, small business security is educating your users, your employees on the proper usage of social networking in addition to the other security measures that you’re taking. It simply makes good business sense to use these resources, but do it wisely.
And as a manager or owner of the small business keep in mind that the newer generations of employees coming into the workforce are very, very much used to these tools and you know they’ve done business perhaps with them. But remember they may come from a company before using these tools as well and now rather than used the contacts they had before being your customers might have the information going to competitor. So you’ve got to bear all these in mind, but education is key especially on social networking. And really think hard before you take the Draconian measure of just blocking URLs to Facebook, Twitter linked in and some of these other social networking sites. Listen, it’s good business is good security, education can’t be the cheapest way to protect yourself, your customers, and your employees.
