Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland is Walt Disney's signature attraction. California Travel Tips host Veronica Hill takes a peek inside this beautiful creation and points out some little-known facts. Millions of tourists pass through the arches of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, but few take the time to explore this amazing landmark.
Modeled after the magnificent castle Neu Schwanstein in the Bavarian Alps, this beautiful wood-and-stone reproduction debuted with the Anaheim theme park in 1955.
The working drawbridge, surrounded by a moat with friendly ducks, was lowered on opening day and in 1983 during the reopening of Fantasyland.
No detail was spared building Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, from its gold-plated squirrel gargoyles, spires and turrets, to its regal flags, clock chandelier and intricate windows and wooden doors. Look closely on the ground leading to the castle and you’ll discover a time capsule buried during the theme park’s 40th anniversary.
Above the entrance arches you’ll see Walt Disney’s family crest. You can look for your own family name in the Castle Heraldry Shop while admiring its Knights of Armor and spiked maces on display.
Inside the castle, a magic crystal boutique entices shoppers, or you can take a closer look at the drawbridge’s mechanics.
The castle’s namesake is honored with murals from the movie and a bronze drinking fountain featuring Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. In the west hall, you’ll discover a display of princess memorabilia, including a cheerful bluebird and Cinderella’s glass slipper.
If you explore the eastern path, you’ll come upon the tranquil Snow White’s Grotto. This magical spot is the perfect place to make a wish in the wishing well or rest a spell while enjoying a water show, chiming bells and sweet song. The real Snow White often makes appearances here.
Next time you’re in the Disneyland theme park, take a closer look at Walt Disney’s signature attraction. I think you’ll find it quite charming.
