Host: Hi everyone! It's Practical Mommy from MyMommyManual.com and I'm visiting today with the Vanessa Van Petten, who is the author of You're Grounded and she is the Founder of Radical Parenting. So parenting from the teens perspective.
So, we were talking about the big difference between parents today, who are the Gen Xers and may be the baby boomers and who, the people who are playing the roles of the kids which are the Gen Y and the Gen Zs and so what is that big difference? What is that?
Vanessa Van Petten: There's actually a site I came recent that I think really demonstrates the major difference between this generation gap, there's a huge gap between Gen Y and Gen X even though you know it's really only a year.
Right it's difference between getting a screen name in fifth grade, even and starting on Facebook as soon as you turn 13 and on. So, it's a very-very big difference. Now in the study came out that looked out music videos. Music videos from the 80s and the music video today.
In the 80s the screen on the music videos changed about every 10.4 seconds so it give you some time. Today music video change every 0.73 seconds. So a lot faster and you look at if Gen Xers and Baby Boomers parents watch the video they can't tell you they miss a lot of happening, they can't tell you what happens.
Whereas Gen Zs and Gen Ys watch the video and speed it up to 0.42 seconds and be able to tell you what it's about. Example of the thought that we and I say we as Gen Y and Gen Zs, have been sort of programs to take in more and more quickly on a very surface level and we also, technology for us is not a twist, it's a lifestyle.
A lot adults say, I choose not to have Facebook, that is not really a choice for us, you know when you turn 13, if you want to be keeping the everything, do you want to share pictures and you want to get ready to event.
Host: That's the culture.
Vanessa Van Petten: Right it's the given. So I think that after a huge difference that parents should that for us technology is way of being, it's a way a communicating, it's how we communicate and then we work a lot faster, but it can be at much more surface level.
Host: Okay, okay so when you're parenting, this group, one is, it's how to help them manage that, it's not really a question of whether or not you're going to give them access to that world, it's more of how to help them navigate that world.
Vanessa Van Petten: Right, and now teens and kids have two reputation to manage and parents can really help their kids understand this because when parents were younger they had one reputation to manage, you know they went to a school and they have their reputation at school and now kids have a reputation at school and online and the parents needs to help them balance that.
