The Stars and Stripes are a symbol of American Freedom and Personal Liberties. In recent years, citizens of the Unites States have felt an increased desire to celebrate the Red, White and Blue. For some people that's included buying their first American flag. Unfortunately, flags don't come with instructions. Luckily for you, the U.S. National Flag Code of 1923 provides the proper patriot etiquette.
The Flag Code of 1923 is the guide for all handling and display of the flag. It does not however, impose penalties for misuse. Typically, it is raised at dawn and lowered at dusk. If a flag is left above the dusk, it must be properly illuminated. If a neighbor or a local business keeps the flag up at night without it being illuminated, be courteous when telling them to correct their display. No flag or pennant may be placed above the flag or to the right of the U.S. Flag. That means the view is left. When the flag is displayed from a staff ejecting horizontally or at an angle from the window sill, balcony or front of the building, the Union of the flag should be placed at the peak of the staff.
State flags may fly at equal height as the U.S. flag, but most differ, except Texas of course. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against the wall, the Union should be the uppermost and to the flag's own right. The flag should never be displayed with the Union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. The flag, when it's dirty or worn out and in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem to display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
According to the Flag Code definition, a flag is a flag or anything by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation, may believe the same to represent the flag. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs, printed or otherwise impressed on the paper napkins or boxes or anything which is designed for temporary use and discard. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery.
The flag represents a living country, and is itself considered as a living thing. Therefore, the lapel of flag pin being a replica, should be one of the left lapel near the heart.
Proper.
