A great way to burn yourself! Never, NEVER put fire in a fireplace until all paper, kindling, and wood is ready. It's OK to leave a shallow base of ashes as this helps fire to catch, as long as it does choke off air circulation. Build up a base of kindling on top of a few sheets of paper--try to avoid the waxy "magazine" section. Next, select a good size unsplit log to be the "backlog" and slide it toward the rear: this will help to reflect heat out toward the room instead of going straight up. Now, finish laying your fire by looking at your supply and following the old Boy Scout "Finger, thumb, wrist, arm" rule: increase the thickness of the wood as you build higher. DO NOT pile the wood solidly, it won't get any oxygen! (The reason straw bale houses don't burn is the tinder-dry straw is packed solid. A blowtorch won't get them lit!) Try to shoot for a max of half an inch gaps between your sticks. NOW it's time for a match.
