Female: Mulching can help prevent weeds and also preserve moisture. And if you use an organic mulch such as compost, or grass clippings, or leaves, it can be helpful to the soil because it eventually breaks down and then builds up the soil. Around these roses, we’re going to use a layer of mulch that’s four inches deep.
Male: It helps to chop up things like dead leaves on the chip when you’re making mulch but it doesn’t speed up the breakdown of organic matter.
You can buy compost or you can make your own. I’ll teach you some organic material like grass clippings, leaves or branches. And a place where the compost ferment like this compost bin. It’s also a good idea to place it in the shade because compost can build up quite a bit of heat.
To make compost, dump a first layer of material about six inches deep. You can add inoculants to help the process. Fertilizer works and there are products available with a bacteria and enzymes that get the compost and process started.
And water each layer and keep building enough until you get to the top. And every week or so, stir up the compost evenly and keep it moist. In a couple of months or so, your compost is ready for the garden.
