Hi! I am Ryan with Just Doors. Today, we’re going to be talking about installing a deadbolt. Now most doors, if you purchase a new one, will come with a hole drilled in it. However, if you don't have a hole, we’re going to show you what you need to do to prep the door marked for the holes and drill out for the deadbolt itself.
Now if your door comes bored with holes already, you can go ahead and skip to the next clip. This door doesn't have a hole in it for the handle. So we’ll be marking 36 up from the bottom of the door and then 5 ½ up from there for the proper deadbolt location. Now we’ll use a speed square to mark where our holes are on each side of the door, now we’ll mark the other side as well. This particular hole will be marked at 2 3/8 to accommodate the backset. When figuring out the location for the backset, determine if you are going to do a 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inch. Most of the new deadbolts that you will purchase from any home store will be adjustable for 2 3/8 and 2 ¾ because we don't have a hole drilled, we can set the backset up. Now that we’ve got our holes marked, we’re ready to drill for the deadbolt. Now we’ll be using our 1-8th drill bit to mark pilot holes where our center line is on our door. Now we’ll move to the other side, find our mark, drill about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch in. Just give it a—double check it for accuracy, 2 3/8. Now we’ll switch for 2-1/8 hole saw and begin drilling.
Drill about half way through the door, move to the other side and finish all the way through. It's important to keep the drill level and plum when you are drilling through the hole. You also want to find the center of the hole for the backset. This is an inch 3/4 door, so we will mark our center at 7/8. Now we are using a 1 inch spade bit to drill for backset. Again, it's important to keep this very straight going into the holes so that you don't mess up either side of the door. Now that our holes are drilled, we are ready to mark and chisel for the backset. Just mark all four sides so you know where to chisel. Now that we are marked for the deadbolt, we are ready to chisel. I'll be using a one inch chisel for this. It's a good idea to start from the top and bottom as a backset should be somewhere around one inch. Hammer the chisel in approximately in an 8th to just 3/16th.
Be careful when drilling the sides that you don't go too deep and chip off the edge of the door. Set the chisel back about 1/8 of an inch, trying to keep it as flat as possible when you’re hammering it. Chisel out through an approximate depth of 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch. Use the backset to check that it's flushed with the edge of the door. Now that the holes are drilled and the backset is chiseled out, we are ready to install the backset and deadbolt.
