Learn how to Paint with Acrylics - Additional Layering
Hi, I’m Mary Gallagher Stout, and today we are at the Lorton Workhouse Center, where my studio is, and we are creating a very stony lion. And we’re at the point now where we’re going to mix, custom mix our own very warm gray. So I’m gonna show you how to do that. So, let’s get started. I’m using burnt sienna, paints gray and titanium white and this is going to make a very pale, very warm gray that I’m making my stone out off. So I just take these colors and I grab a palette knife and I just start to mix them. Now this is not an exact science, you kinda have to use your own artistic eyeballs and decide how dark you want your gray. We want it to be a light gray, so you’re gonna need to use more white. And then the burnt sienna we’re adding that to help really warm up this gray. And you might have to play with it, coz you know, it’s like I said, it’s not an exact science and you’re just gonna keep mixing. So this is the color gray that we’re looking to achieve, and this is, we’re going to use it as a wash. So I’m gonna add water to it to help it be, to dilute it, and then we’re gonna roll it on very haphazardly with our roller on to our warm surface to make, to start to create our gray. So, gonna add a little water and you can use a squirt bottle and just add the water in, and then you just gonna re stir. You kinda want it like ink, I would say, well that would be the consistency. You don’t want it, I would say this, this pasty, and again, we’re just creating stones so it doesn’t matter if it’s perfect. Because we’re gonna be building other layers on top of this one as well. We’re actually gonna be toning it with a darker color, a darker wash, so. That’s why we need it to be so much lighter. So let’s roll this on very haphazardly. Here’s our trusty roller. And I hate to waste paint so I’m always wiping as much paint as I can on to these rollers. And I’m gonna add a little bit more water to my paint so it goes further. And again, I’m just gonna be putting it on very haphazardly coz I don’t want it to look, you know, like it’s been rolled on. I’m trying to make a stone, and we got a little bit more water. And I have a little bit too thick, and if you see as you take in you just squirt some water right there on to your mixture and move it around that way. And we’re just adding on. Do I have any lap marks? Nope. Alright. Now that we’ve laid in our light gray shade, I put it on a little too dark, purposefully. And, so we’re gonna need to go in and darken some of the lines around the lion. So we’re gonna add some shadows to the lion so I can see the information that I’m starting to lose. So that’s all you’ll need to do, you’ll never need to freak out if you, there’s never a mistake. You can never make a mistake, you just need to stop and re assess and that’s what we’re doing now. So we’re gonna sketch it in with some paint.
