Learn the Dorian Scale Guitar Lesson

This is the Dorian scale in the key of A. So this is in minor scale and this is how I will play it starting on the V fret on the low E string. [Demonstration] Then, back we are going to increase tempo. [Demonstration] And the pentatonic scale, the Am pentatonic has the same notes and this scale also has five notes but this all five notes. Also, exist in the Dorian scale. [Demonstration] And the same goes for the A blue scale. [Demonstration] Except for that note. [Demonstration] That is the blue note. [Demonstration] Those three scales have long nose stick that already the same so we have lot of notes in common. So, that means that you could also mix them up all three when you play and improvise for example Am. [Demonstration] That might be the groove there on actual. [Demonstration] That is just doing the pentatonic then, the Am pentatonic where I can do a little blues field. [Demonstration] That is the one that makes it different from the pentatonic scale the blue note. [Demonstration] So and then, we should switch to the Dorian. [Demonstration] That was blues for the Dorian. [Demonstration] That is the note to add on there next to the Dorian field plus [Demonstration] That note, that does not exist in either the blues scale or the pentatonic scale. Otherwise, so you could look at the Dorian scale as like the Am pentatonic. It has that note at it which is the VI [Demonstration] And that note which is the second or the ninth. Otherwise, it is the same as the pentatonic. [Demonstration] That was the pentatonic and here is the one. [Demonstration] Right. So, you could combine it. [Demonstration] So, that was combine of both blues scale and the Dorian. [Demonstration] Blue scale, [Demonstration] Dorian scale, [Demonstration] So, this is the pentatonic. [Demonstration] And the Dorian, [Demonstration] And then blues [Demonstration] Because that note, [Demonstration] Blue scale, [Demonstration] Pentatonic, [Demonstration] Dorian, [Demonstration] Pentatonic, [Demonstration] And so on. That is how I think if you want to improvise. I just make these notes together. I think of it as scales sometimes but it is more of like the notes on these scales. I want to use that sixth note. That is part of the Dorian scale but I think it was more like I want to use it. The sixth note is good.
