Bean soup anyone and me neither.
Coral Ridge Ministries presents Learn to Discern with John Rage.
The U.S. Senate dinning room famous for its navy bean soup and not much else will soon be under a new management. The dinning room is part of a network of government run eateries with two things in common: Mediocre food and service and decades of financial failure. The Senate food operation has lost a staggering $80,000,000 since 1993. It's expected to loose $2,000,000 this year and needed $250,000 recently just to make payroll. So finally after more than 40 years of not so great food and millions of loses, the Senate has just made the tough call to let a private For-Profit firm run the cafes and restaurants created for senators, staffers and visitors.
Well, that's a decision, tax payers can take comfort in. Not to mention, belligerent Senate staffers will no longer need to hike over the house side of the capital where the private firm runs the food service in order to get an edible meal. The Senate vote to let free enterprise rescue its failing food service comes nearly 400 years after the Pilgrims were forced into the same choice.
For their first two years in the new world, the pilgrims owned and farmed the land in common. An arrangement was led to meager harvests, sharp hunger pangs and general ill will. Finally after much debate, the pilgrims governor, William Bradford, made the decision to privatize. He gave the pilgrims their own land to farm and suddenly the harvests grew. Governor Bradford wrote, "This had very good success for it made all hands industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could devise." The number of acres under cultivation tripled in one year ant the pilgrims flourished.
So give the Senate its due. Four centuries after the pilgrims harness the power of private enterprise to solve their food woes, the world's most prestigious club is on the shame. Let's hope and pray our Senator adopt pilgrim wisdom more often.
I hope this has helped you learn to distort and that you will share this message with your friend. For Coral Ridge Ministries, I am John Rage.
