Hey! Welcome to watchmojo.com. I am your host Melissa and today is Halloween. Now, the word Halloween actually comes from medieval English where the word hallow means saint and, of course, we celebrate Halloween on the eve of All Saint’s Day. And we are all familiar with what holiday now entails. Essentially, it is little kids getting dressed up in their favorite costumes and going door to door to collect candy.
Now, we are also very familiar with what have become symbols of Halloween whether it be jack-o’-lanterns, witches and ghosts, black cats, candy apples or the traditional colors of black and orange. But do we know how it all started?
Well, maybe the traditions go back in predate Christianity and they actually go back to the Celtic practices associated with Samhain which was the beginning of winter in the Celtic New Year. It was believed that witches and other evil spirits roam the earth and play tricks on human beings to mark the season of diminishing sunlight. Now, the few believe in order to avoid the persecution of the evil spirits, they would light bonfires, make offerings of sweet, and actually disguise themselves as the evil spirits. Now, the holiday itself along with these traditions was only brought to North America during the 19th Century during the migration of the Irish as of the potato famine.
So now, you know all bout Halloweens. So, get dressed up, take the kids out and happy trick or treating.
