What I want to do now is briefly talk about punching. I don't spend too much time on punching. Everybody thinks they now have to punch, but unless you have been studying martial art or boxing for several years, trust me it’s a very difficult skill to learn.
What I want to talk about is how to generate real power. If you’re thinking on how to punch, this is a great tip for you. Body motion is the real key. We look at him, when he is punching now, power isn't coming just from the arms. His body is not same straight. His body is staying upright but he is twisting, the shoulders, at the hips all way down to his feet.
So the shoulders are driving through with the hips. His body is staying away from any oncoming attacks, but his full body motion generating maximum power. Another key point is heavy striking. He is striking at 90 degrees. Just freeze it. This is striking at 90 degrees. All the power is going exactly where he wants it to go that’s into his attacker.
Now, if he is striking him at an angle, some of that power is going to naturally deflect away. If you are striking at 90 degrees all the power is going exactly where you want it to go. You can see the body motion Adam is using is keeping his body away from any oncoming attack. You can see he is still an arm’s length away. So he is not bringing his body into any danger of any oncoming attack here. But the key thing is that 90 degrees okay. Striking at 90 degrees, all the power is going exactly where you want it to go.
If we are looking at it now with the street application, he maybe defending himself against an attack coming in. A lot of martial arts teach block and counter. Now, I am here to tell you today that block and counter does not work on the street. Block and counter will not work. What you’re going to do is block and strike at the same time, okay. So the block creates the punch for you. You can see the body motion is exactly the same as when you are throwing two punches, but the motion of the block is creating the punch.
This is obviously a slow motion, okay, but you can see the body motion needed there, blocking and striking at the same time. If you block and then strike, you’re going to get hit and hurt. That’s the punching body motion.
Now the theories are same, okay whether you are using punches or palm heels, the body motion is exactly the same. Punches or palm heels exactly the same, and then the block and then strike won't work for you on the street. Block, strike at the same time if you are going to use a block or two.
