Learning Disabilities in School

Johan: I am Johan from Clearwater, Florida. I have a child labeled as learning disabled. What kind of help should I expect from her school?

Albert Galaburda: So for children there are established laws that require the school systems make efforts to make a diagnosis, and treat children with learning disabilities, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit, etcetera. The first thing to do is to test them. Some school systems don't have the resources to keep an educational psychologist around to test these but they are still required to send that child to another school where these resources are available. This is required by Federal Law. So you can talk to the school and request that testing be done. A lot of people will get that testing done privately because they have more confidence in it but the school is responsible to test the child and to produce some sort of treatment plan special education, for your child, after the results of the tests are complete.
