Host: Should I separate my existing dog and newly adopted dog when I'm not at home? Kevin Simpson: It’s generally not a bad idea to separate your current dog from your newly adopted dog whenever you’re away from home. At least during the transition period where the two dogs are getting to know one another and two dogs are still establishing rank amongst one another. Sometimes those periods can take upwards of six weeks or more. So just for the safety of all until the dogs have proven that they can get along quite well with one another. When you're not home to supervise them, it’s generally not a bad idea to go ahead and separate them.
