Hello everybody, Marco Chiappetta for HotHardware here. Thanks for stopping by to check out this video spotlight of the Lenovo W700ds Mobile Workstation.
Lenovo announced these machines late last year and then now offering them in a wide array of configuration options. Intel duo or quad core, core 2 processors and video Quadro FX GPUs, dual or single hard drive configurations with Intel turbo memory options and up to 8 Gigs of RAM are available. We’ve got one of these 11-pound dual screen mobile power houses in the lab right now complete with a Core 2 Extreme, QX9300, 2.5 3 GHz processor, a Quadro FX 3700 1 GB GPU, dual Hitachi 150 GB hard drives and a Raid O configuration and 4 GB RAM. What do you say when we fire it up and go check it out?
On the front of the thin pad W700 DS, there’s a single latch that holds the lead in place, an ST card reader and headphone and microphone jacks. On this side of the machine, we see three USB 2.0 ports, a mode of jack. a little spot here for the stylish for the integrated Wacom digitizer tablet, the optical drive. This one happens to be a CD burner DVD combo and the exhaust ports for some of the cooling fans. On the back of the W700 DS, we see two more exhaust ports for the integrated cooling system. A jack for the power supply connection, another jack for wired Ethernet and display port, VGA and dual link DVI outputs. We should note those digital display outputs support resolutions up to 2560x1600. Not many notebooks can do that.
And right up here, you can see some indicator lights for sleep power, battery charging etcetera. On the left side of the machine, we see a mini FireWire port, two more USB ports, an express port expansion slot and a compact flash card reader. There is a lot to see with the W700 DS opened up and ready for action. Along the top here, you can see more status LED indicators. You have a volume up down and new buttons here right next to the blue ThinkVantage button. The keyboard is near full size with a full numeric keypad to the right. You got the power button here, an integrated track point pointing device here. In addition to attach pad here, these five buttons are for use with the pointing devices but there’s actually a little more to see. If you shift over to the right, you’ll see an integrated fingerprint reader. This area here which is slightly different color on the—is the integrated Wacom digitizer tablet. The little style that’s on the side can be used for that and it maybe hard to see but just above the tablet, there’s a little tiny sensor for the integrated color calibrator from x-ray. That can be used for precise pantone color matching. It simply close the lid while running the included utility and it calibrates everything for you automatically.
The W700 DS has an absolutely gorgeous main 17-inch LCD with a native resolution of 1920x1200. It features 400 nits of brightness and supports 72% of the Adobe color gamut. We know that’s important for the professionals out there. Now, with the fast Intel Quad Core processor and then the NVIDIA Quadro GPU at the heart of the machine, you know it has no trouble handling any kind of HD content like this 1080P video clip we’ve got going here but the high resolution screens also handy for professionals who like to have multiple applications open at once. There you see the blank desktop and here’s HotHardware and the HotHardware forms side by side. Now, it doesn’t get much better than that.
Okay, maybe I spoke just a bit too soon. Things could probably get a little better. First, well I zoomed back a bit, you’ll notice the W700 DS has an integrated webcam situated right above the main LCD and the bezel there but this notebook’s defining characteristic has got to be its integrated secondary display. With a little press and a little pull, it pops out. It’s going to power up in just a second. Now with the second display powered up, you can move basically whatever you want over to it. Now, how cool is that?
Now, for content creation professionals who work and say photo shop with premiere, you can have all your tools on the right hand display and save the main content area for whatever you’re working on. Very, very cool feature. We also thought it’d be a good idea to show you the Wacom digitizer tablet in action. As I mentioned earlier, you can have your tool and menu bars over on the right hand screen and save the main content window for the beautiful 17-inch display.
Now, the digitizer tablet is here on the—you’ll notice as I touch it with my finger or palm, nothing happens. That’s good because you don’t want unwanted mouse scars or movement while you’re typing but if you take out the stylist, hit the screen, you can write, draw or do whatever is necessary with the tablet. Pretty cool feature.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this look at the Lenovo W700 DS dual screen mobile workstation. Once again, this is Marco Chiappetta for HotHardware. Thanks for stopping by.
