So we are going to start this podcast, the ivideosongs 'lick of the week' with the idea of that each week we are going to present a new lick, it could be beginner, intermediate, advanced in pretty much any style. So it's going to be kind of a random podcast in that sense. So we are going to have a Country lick one week, a Jazz lick, a rock lick next week at all different levels and the first one we are going to start with is this pretty cool chromatic lick based on the a-minor scale really the a-dorian scale, it's got some chromatic stuff in there.
So it start right before the beat, 16th now right before the beat, I am going to play very slowly. And of course I am demonstrating this key at the A, we will talk about moving it, transposing it to other keys, but one of things that I want to get across is that we are going to be basically in 5th position for the most of it. So your fingers are going to line up for most of this lick 1, 2, 3, 4 at frets 5, 6, 7, and 8 and we are going to start with the fourth fret actually, the fourth finger rather at the 6th fret of the 4th string. So you are going to slide into the 7th fret and then slide the first finger in from 4 to 5. So you get -- and then 7 to 8 on the 3rd string to get.
The next part is just going to be chromatic or by half step from 5 to 8 5, 6, 7, 8 of the 2nd string. So you have got and then pull-off to the 5th fret so you get, and then a pull-off from the 7th to the 5th fret, that's the note that really makes this kind of a dorian sounding A minor lick. So you have got.
The next part is chromatic 7, 6, 5, 7, so that 7, 6, 5, 7 down the 3rd string. So you get and then 4, 5, 4 on the 3rd string, then 7 to 6th on the 4th string. So you get back to the 4th fret on the 3rd string and ending on the 7th fret of the 5th string so again slowly.
So that would be in the key their. Let's say we want to just take that to the key of D, simply move it up to D blues box here at the 10th position and in this case you are going to slide a half step below the D like that for the D, who is in G, to the key G. So, it's really about sliding a half step into the root note on the 4th string for whichever key you are going to try playing at the end. So again very slowly in the key of A.
So a little tricky but if you just practice, you can obviously pick all the notes or do any variety of hammer on to pull-offs to give a different feel that's entirely up to you, but the thing about it is pretty much 16th notes and it starts right before the beat.
That's the lick of the week.
Hi, this is Alex Lifeson of Rush and today we are going to work on the Spirit of Radio. It starts at the F-sharp, which is the second fret on the high E string and its --
