Female: Welcome back to part three, our final trip to Photomart is to a seminar run by John Gray. Who’s demonstrating the effects of lighting while photographing a model. Okay, so now John, what will you be covering today in the workshops?
John: Well today, we’re gonna be demonstrating portraits and how to work with a model as well as the latest ring flash and Bowen’s and basically give the photographers a chance to work in a one on one with the model.
Female: Now as you mentioned earlier, you used predominantly Bowen’s lighting, so why have you chosen that brand?
John: Well Bowen’s I have been working with for some years and the two things I like about them is first of all they’re reliable and I put them through a lot of work, so they’re always working in studio, you know, for many hours. Plus they have a very good repair service and they, you know, look after their customers.
Female: Now I can also see in your set up you got some new soft boxes, how do these compare to maybe the older models?
John: Well the new soft boxes are designed more for digital photography, because digital photography is a much flatter image and the new soft boxes actually got more contrast in them. They’re very good for, you know, digital cameras and that’s primarily what they’re designed for.
Female: Now you’ll also be using a ring flash today which is used predominantly with fashion and beauty photography. So, why is that?
John: Well the new ring flash which is a much better design than the old one, it’s got a higher power, power packs that you buy with it. It’s very good for high fashion. Also a lot of young photographers now are using it for portraits to get a much more sort of a trendy image, a much more powerful image.
Female: And you’ll also be using a model here today.
John: Well I’m gonna be demonstrating a beauty lighting set up, and show these guys how you can do a simple lighting set up which is using these two attachments. And we’re gonna give the guys a one to one chance to work with a model plus I’m gonna be showing the new ring flash, which a lot of the photographers haven’t seen lately. And hopefully they’ll gonna enjoy it and have a good time.
Female: And have you got any top tips maybe for aspiring and professional photographers?
John: Yes, I’d say most important is to design a good website so that their images can be seen, they have different styles of images, different sort of contrasting images. Plus obviously, they have to promote themselves through the website. So change the website in a regular basis. And basically give good quality work as well as creative work.
