Can you think of any reason why a seemingly healthy tulip poplar would suddenly begin to have large branches/limbs break off. The last two breaks happened when there was no measurable wind. The tree itself and the fallen branches look healthy. No evidence of insect investation, etc. The only thing I notice is that at the base of each branch/limb where it grows out of the trunk, there seems to be a darkened area on either side of the branch where it attaches. Not having seen any other trees of this type up close, I don't know if this is normal. I suppose we will have to have someone come and take a look at it. I worry that we will soon have one fall on our deck. Thanks.
