Liquid Intake and Bloating

Shelly: Hello, my name is Shelly from Boston. When I drink liquids I feel bloated, is this water retention and if it is what can I do about it?

David Rubin: Shelly, this is a question I am asked often. Water that can cause bloating may be due to intestinal sensitivity, it may also be due to other problems with the way the stomach empties or the way the intestines are moving food and digested materials through them. Some people just feel bloated and you can actually measure it by looking at their circumference of their abdomen when they are feeling bloated and it is usually not due to water retentions sort to speak, although some women do have water retention during their menstrual period more commonly with the bloated feeling from eating is due to lactose intolerance or certain foods that are not agreeing with an individual.
