Butch Rice: Hey. I’m Butch Rice and you’re looking at Louisville.
Chaz Rough: Welcome everyone tot his edition of Looking at Louisville. I’m Chaz.
Stacey Yates: I’m Stacey.
Chaz Rough: And we are here at the Bodega. You know we’re on the downtown Louisville but we’re here because…
Stacey Yates: I stop here a lot. It’s one of my favorite little places to go on the way home from work when I need a quick dinner, pick up some pastas and meat, cheeses, olives, things like that, even a bottle of wine.
Chaz Rough: Yeah it’s great food and it’s got great coffee but we’re coming here to get food for a specific reason.
Stacey Yates: We are going to take a picnic today. We haven’t done that yet right? Normally we did a local dining spot and this is actually a great spot here. It’s crowded for lunch now I think. We’re going to pick out some of the things that I pick up on the way from work and we’re going to go back to Waterfront Park which we’ve been to for several episodes. We’re going to show people how you can use the park when you got an event that you are going to shoot.
Chaz Rough: What apart from Wednesdays.
Stacey Yates: Right. And today we’re just going to picnic and rent some of the bike rentals that you can do all up and down the great lawn and the whole area and we’re going to show folks why 1.5 million people go to Waterfront Park every year just to have a good time.
Chaz Rough: Well, let’s go get our food and get started.
Stacey Yates: Get at it.
Chaz Rough: Well Stacey, you’ve picked out a lot of great food at the Bodega and of course, we’ve already eaten to it all but tell us what he had for our lunch today.
Stacey Yates: Well, we had a couple of meat, some Capocola, some black forest ham. You wanted something to this turkey, and pepperoni. We had there smoked Provolone and smoked Tokuda. We’re into smoky flavors today. And then we had three spreads from a local company. I get these a lot at the Bodega and also at lots of pasta in the wine rack on Frankfurt Avenue. We had a home-made Benedictine which is you know as of Kentucky’s regional favorite. We had a black bean spread and we had a Mediterranean goat cheese. We had a couple of salads and the broccoli-cauliflower salad with raisins was really good and Asian coleslaw and then we had some buffalo — and tomatoes and olives to round it all out. And finally, you had to have bread with that, so bodega carries blue dog bread which is a local Artistnal bakery on Frankfurt Avenue, and that’s what I do.
Chaz Rough: So I’m full and I’m still not done eating and in fact we’re going to work it off a little bit with a bike run.
Stacey Yates: We are?
Chaz Rough: But before that, yes we are, we’re going to work our food out. But in the mean time, we’re actually in a great location because over looking part of the waterfront is an area where they have live music which is Waterfront Wednesdays…
Stacey Yates: Which you went to last night?
Chaz Rough: Yes I did and it’s from April to August, the last Wednesday of every month so we’re going to cut to that and then after that we’re going for a bike run.
Stacey Yates: Okay. Sounds great.
I think it’s amazing. I think it’s amazing that it’s free. WFPK is the best station in Louisville and I’m really proud of our city that we can do things like that.
Chaz Rough: The Waterfront is the heart of the city you know. This city was built on a river. They have free concerts down here once a month put on by the best radio stations in town. It’s a no-brainer.
Stacey Yates: It’s wonderful down here. Right choice of buffet.
Chaz Rough: Well, we got out little saury and we’re both in control driving so we can’t. It’s a nice hot day.
Stacey Yates: Like a European style a bit.
Chaz Rough: So now we get to work out by and get lunch.
Stacey Yates: Let’s go.
Chaz Rough: Let’s go.
Hey Stacey meet also — shop?
Stacey Yates: Yeah. One of the couple of the Waterfront restaurant up here in —and Tumbleweed and of course on the inner side, we got rocky, bulkheads and kingfish on the river.
Chaz Rough: Look at this over here we got a nice hot summer day and the kids arrive here swimming instead of a little.
We’ve got the guard life. This is where they host live big events like you know the 4th of July. Thunder Over Louisville and right now.
Stacey Yates: Iron man, this is the bike exchange for iron man and I’ll get say all the swimmers come from up river. They swim down here after their two miles and through all the bikers apart and they make the exchange to do the 100mile bike ride.
So this is really cool. It’s all work of a local artist who’s no longer with us unfortunately but his legacy lives on here. His name is Marvin Penn and he is famous for the art physics, sculptures I guess renderings of birds and fowls, chicken and some ostriches, flamingos in there. They’re really cool when obviously really popular with a little pets because they are so colorful.
Female: It’s family friendly and most economical. There are not a lot of places for the kids to go they become just be pretty like it you know.
Child: I’m excited because I could get wet and this is the only place I get to go wet at and I’m having fun so great.
Chaz Rough: We’re on a trail right now you know. There’s also the linking trail and we’re coming up to a statue that just was unveiled and it’s my first time seeing it so I’m really excited about it and…
Stacey Yates: So sculpture Ed Hamilton?
Chaz Rough: Yep. Local and—
Stacey Yates: He’s done a piece all over the country including the one in Washington D.C. and most people of course know that Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and most of his childhood here. But he also had a special infinity toward global because his best friends John Speed lived in Louisville at Farmington and he spent, lived with an entire summer here before he got married after this royalty he and Mary Todd. He ended up future Mrs. Lincoln, had broken up and he came to Louisville to hang out with his best friend for a little R and R. And so this might have been a typical scene of him riverside studying for law school and telling stories to children before coming up.
Chaz Rough: It’s really hot out here so we’re going to take a run to the sprinklers and cool off a little bit so I need to…
There you go. I actually feel a lot better on the lake here. No I didn’t know— I tell you what I do for a lot better. We got to get this back.
Well, I’m all wet and sweat’s all around me.
Stacey Yates: Quite refreshing.
Chaz Rough: Yes it was.
Stacey Yates: But I’m ready for ice cream now.
Chaz Rough: Yeah, we’re ready to cool off but—
Stacey Yates: I want a break.
Chaz Rough: It’s a great time—
Stacey Yates: It’s a lot of fun and really affordable. What is it? $26 for an hour.
Chaz Rough: Twenty six? That’s free to get to run to the water.
Stacey Yates: Doubled and quadruples and they had those two best of things too and bike.
