Zach Rutledge: Hello there friends, Zach Rutledge with another adventurous episode of doing Indy. We’re downtown at the Indianapolis Zoo for a zootastic time because there’s always something new to see and do here, and this year is no different.
Maura Giles: The Indianapolis Zoo’s newest temporary exhibit, “Dragons of Komodo” presented by Citizens Energy Group opened Memorial Day weekend and it only runs through Labor Day.
This is the first time that Indianapolis has ever seen Komodo Dragons. The Komodo Dragons are actually the largest lizards in the world and so we have two of the largest lizards in the world at Indianapolis Zoo.
Hudo and Dipsner weigh about 75 to 80 pounds each. They are each over 8-feet long. Komodo dragons actually can get up to 10-feet long.
Komodo dragons are venomous. They have poisonous bite. They can take down a buffalo. When they bite their venom will actually sink into the buffalo and get it in its system. The Komodo dragon will follow it for a few days until the venom actually takes over the buffalo.
Our exhibit is actually behind glass, so visitors can come and they can look through the glass and see the dragons because if they get too close they could potentially get bit which is very, very dangerous.
The mission of the Indianapolis Zoo is to empower people to care about their natural world and animals and people who live in it. So to see this Komodo dragon is endangered creatures that are so rare as a real treat for us and the people of Indianapolis.
For many people, this is their only chance to see real dragons up close. There’s something about seeing the visitors faces when you walk through the plains area and you pass elephants and there are these two giant lizards that are actually dragons. And they are just kind of awed and stuck up against the glass and just kind of watching as Hudo and Dipsner walk back and forth and splash through the pond. It’s kind of magical.
Zach Rutledge: The Komodo Dragon exhibit runs until Labor Day so get out and see them before they’re gone. Well this is all the time we got in this episode in doing Indy. I’m your host Zach Rutledge, this is Dipsner and we’ll see you next time.
