Jennifer: Hey, we are sitting here with our good friend, Paul Carlson. He is also a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and life coach here in Dallas, Texas.
So Paul, here is a question for today, okay. What are the biggest reasons that couples fight, and is there any possible way to avoid them?
Paul: That is a real common question. Of course, one of the major reasons is lack of compatibility and sex. And that is something you just have to work on. If you are having problems, you know, with your partner, get counseling. Just get some counseling.
Another issue is money. Sometimes there is not enough money. Sometimes it is that one is earning a lot more than the other and it seems to be a more problem when the female is earning more than the male and that old male ego gets in there.
Probably the biggest understanding or the biggest issue that causes problem is lack of understanding. Men and women communicate differently. If you have read the book of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”, you will understand a lot more about the differences in the ways of communicating.
Usually, this is not a huge problem other than misunderstanding. So spend a little time on your relationship. You spend all those years in school, learning all the things that you need to do in life, except the biggest decision that you are making in your life is to have a relationship, a one on one significant other. And how much homework do we do for that?
Jennifer: How would you know if you really love him?
Paul: Yes, look, you need to make a little investment of your time and your effort in order to make everything work. And when you know of front that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, we just process differently. We have different cultural requirements, things that are required of men, are generally different than things that are required of women. And to be able to understand all that, and effectively communicate about it means that the reason for conflict lessen and lessen. And the less conflict you have in a marriage, generally, the longer it lasts, poor relationship does not have to be a marriage.
