Hi welcome to Made Fit TV. I’m your host Jennifer DiDonato and this is episode number 72, made fit TV
is everyone’s source for health and fitness information and entertainment where fit bodies don’t just
happen overnight, they’re made with a little bit of time but with the tips that I provide you, hopefully,
you’ll make it a little bit easier so welcome to our episode. Today’s episode is healthy thanksgiving
recipes and today we’re going to do a lower sugar, healthier cranberry sauce. Cranberry sauce as
healthy as it is because cranberries are great antioxidants but this recipe I’m going to show you is a little
bit lower in sugar and kind of forces you to maybe explore different sugar substitutes or different types
of sugars that you can use in your cranberry sauce. So first thing I just want to say, I want to give a shout
out to 5min.com, Roxanna there, she was great. Just let you guys know, we were featured, made fit TV
was featured on the front page of 5min.com and it was just such a great surprise that we had it there
and they worked it out. We were featured the top thing for the health and fitness so check it out. They
have a lot of cool videos on there for your everyday life. So 5min.com thanks Roxanna. This is an
interesting episode, I have to tell you guys, I wanted to do two recipes. So I was going to do along with
the cranberry sauce, another alternative for mash potatoes using cauliflower and a great recipe had it all
there, the guys on Ustream, you guys are watching me live, you saw it. Put it in the blender, put it in the
food processor and I took a dump. The food processer decided not to work for me today and we’re
going to have to return it. So I’m really sorry, I’m not going to be able to show that to you guys. This
just happened so what I’m going to do though is I’m going to post that recipe on Wednesday’s made fit
TV episode when this airs and you guys can see it, go to madefittv.com and the recipe is going to be
printed out right there for you to see.
So if you’re in Youtube and everything, you guys aren’t going to be able to see it so go to madefittv.com
and you can print off that recipe along with the recipe that I’m just about to show you. So let’s get
started. I am doing the cranberry sauce. So what we need is you need one bag of cranberries. I
recommend that you just purchase a couple of bags this time of year, it’s thanksgiving, it’s going to go
really quick and you don’t want to be stuck at the grocery store with no cranberries. Sad, tear. So get a
couple right now. Freeze a few of them, what I do is I froze this one so I’m going to take a full bag and I
put a cup of water in a pan. So what I’m going to do, it’s not boiling yet. What you want to do is add a
cup of water and then add a bag of the cranberries. They can be frozen or they can be right out of the
fridge. I just froze it because I don’t want it to get funky, because I bought them, I got a head started on
that, I bought them awhile ago so about a week ago. Put your cranberries in there, tada, see simple
enough so what I’m going to do is I’m going to put it on the stove and I’m going to let it simmer for
about 7 minutes. So we’ll be right back when it’s simmering. So while I’m making that simmer, what I
did is I took one orange and what you want to do is you want to peel the rind off of it. I just used a little-
make sure you clean it though first because you’re leaving it out in the open at the grocery store and
nasty things can get on there so what I did is I peel it on there and had a nice orange zest. Very good.
I’m just going to throw it over here.
Then I’m going to take the remainder of the orange and we use it and I’m going to put the orange juice
into the cranberry sauce. So I’m just going to show you, I wish my stove was closer. Mix it all in,
cranberry, some of them are starting to pop a little bit and getting mushier right there which is what you
want. So now, last thing I’m going to do, I’m turning the heat down just a little, I had it on medium now,
I’m putting it down. It was at a five and not it’s in a 3. It doesn’t go to 11, I’m sorry. So splenda. I know.
I just want to address that you guy, splenda, moderation. Anything that’s artificial overuse of it is just
not good for you. If you prefer to eat splenda, go right ahead. In my recipes, if you don’t prefer it,
please replace it with some honey or some agave nectar or some brown rice syrup. Something that you
feel better about because I understand that maybe not everyone is a fan of it. I’m not a huge fan of it
myself either. I eat it in moderation but with this recipe, you want to keep it low sugar and of course
agave nectar and honey have a lot of sugar in it, this is the alternative for you. So if you’re diabetic, this
may be a good alternative. So we’re going to do a half a cup of the splenda, the cooking splenda. There
you go and mix it in and I’ll show it to you so you see some of the cranberries are getting mushier after
they pop, they start to get a little mushy.
So we’re going to let that simmer for about 7 minutes and just watch it as you are simmering it because
you want to make sure that it’s not going to overflow and just keep on mixing it and making sure that
it’s getting a good consistency and once it is, it’s done. So we’ll be right back. Okay, as I always tell
everyone, you want to make sure that you keep that recipe that you’re cooking in the front of your
mind. You want to make sure that you are around the kitchen to always check on it. Stirring it
periodically, it came to a simmer and the cranberries turn out like this. And so now with having the
orange zest in there and the orange juice in there. I’m just going to set it down, it’s getting really hot.
You’re adding just another flavor in there because a lot of times, when you’re having a lot of sugar in a
recipe, it’s because it’s lacking other flavors. That’s why putting orange peel and the juice in there or
even using other things like sometimes, people use like rutabagas in there too. So you can use different
things to mix it up and to spark those taste buds in your mouth so you’re not required a lot of sugar and
like I said before, if you want to use another alternative than splenda, that’s great. But it’s good for
diabetics too. All in moderation so this is a great recipe that you can modify for thanksgiving time
putting it on your lovely thanksgiving tablespread for all to enjoy. And you want to know something,
this would be something really good to put into plain yogurt. I’m a big fan of Greek nonfat yogurt. You
can find it at any kind of specialty grocery store. It’s not too expensive but this would be awesome,
absolutely delish to put in yogurt.
Hot. Look good and they still have that tang in there from the cranberries but it’s an awesome
antioxidant so the orange is good. Thank you so much for joining us at madefittv.com. Like I said, I
know it was a little bit of a debacle this episode, but I’m going to post the other recipe that I was going
to show you, the alternative to mash potatoes, it was going to be mashed cauliflower. I swear to god it’s
so yummy and I wish you guys would have been able to see it but go to madefittv.com and I’m going to
have the recipes all laid out there, right there for you but it’s only on that one. It’s not on Youtube or
anything like that so go to madefittv.com if you want to print them off. Let me know what you think,
email me at jenny@madefittv.com, comment on it. Let me know what you guys think of this recipe and
if you would actually bring it to a holiday function for people to try and also on Twitter Jenny Didonato
and I’m on facebook.com/jennydidonato as well so thanks so much for joining us and also review us on
iTunes. I’m getting a lot of hits on there too, I’ll see you next time for made fit TV. Bye. No more mash
potatoes. So okay guys, we’ve got it in there. It’s all good, keep smiling, it’s a nice day. Keep smiling, so
what we’re going to do is you’re going to pulse it on the blender because you don’t want to just make it
into one big huge puree thing so we’re going to turn it on. I’m going to chop them first then I’m going to
mix it.
