Stiffany Young: Hi there and welcome to Neo-Fight.TV, the technology review with two points of view. My name is Tiffany Young.
Ben Freedman:: And I'm Ben Freedman and we’re still at Saguaro Lake, Arizona. It's Tuesday, September 19th. And today, we’re going to have a look at a couple of really cool products if you happened to own a boat. And the first one is this eXplorist XL GPS from Magellan. Now, you have a GPS in your car, right?
Stiffany Young: I do.
Ben Freedman: Right.
Stiffany Young: I do.
Ben Freedman: A great thing about having a GPS on our boat is, how often have you been on a boat and the speedometer doesn’t work or your or you’re cruising along at 40 miles an hour and it says five.
Stiffany Young: Well yeah, I think what happens is as it hits wakes, the prop spins and so it causes it to actually either accelerate or de-accelerate depending on—it's very hard to get a true accurate speed.
Ben Freedman: Also sometimes you get that, you know, you get a seaweed goes in the little prop—you know, you could see weed caught in there.
Stiffany Young: Usually the boat like runs into something and stops altogether, stuff like that, right.
Ben Freedman: No, no, no, but it clogs after the speedometer hole, you know, the sensor.
Stiffany Young: Oh, actually I never had that happened before.
Ben Freedman: —I've seen where you drive boats. You only have one speed full, you know, and so I don’t use speedometer, you just need to know, what’s the maximum speed of the boat?
Stiffany Young: How fast does it go? That’s it.
Ben Freedman: That’s how fast it’s going to go yeah, full speed. This is great, I don’t know if you can see it. We are in Saguaro Lake here and I'm not sure if we‘ll have to zoom in but I’ll see if I can get a picture of it here. Can u see it actually shows we’re on the lake, looks nice and blue and the waves aren’t too much, it's not that funny, you can’t tell the waves on the GPS.
Stiffany Young: Right, right, looks that the way is clear—sunny day.
Ben Freedman: That’s right. And let’s say you are, you look good. And it's really great for just to see how fast you're going and also if your lake has several mariners, if you're in Lake Powell for instance with big marines, you can punch in the longitude, latitude so it’s much easier to find where you’re going.
Stiffany Young: Right. It's more for being like out in the boonies than more like city driving, wont you agree?
Ben Freedman: Well, here’s the thing. It comes with major highway maps but it doesn’t come with surface streets. That’s an extra 150 bucks so you need yourself 300 bucks, not a bad price but if you don’t want to add major surface maps, you know, surface streets and I found when I was driving along, my car is like not quite on the street where it supposed to be.
Stiffany Young: Right and that’s why I’m saying it’s been my experience because I use the standard navigation that comes standard with, you know, a lot of and I’ve tried a couple of the hand held ones that are more like Road Atlas kind of style, this one—
Ben Freedman: They work a lot better for driving.
Stiffany Young: Totally, yeah, they work so much better. This one is more what I found in more like out here to like really kind of tune in to where you are without a lot of streets and roads around, we’re like out in—
Ben Freedman: Right, so in a pinch it will get you by for driving but it's certainly not as good as the ones that are dedicated for driving. Yeah, so with that—and it has a nice rubbery feel do you think?
Tiffany Young: Yeah, it does.
Ben Freedman: Yeah, it holds well, it’s good size.
Stiffany Young: Yeah, it's really a nice feeling unit. I mean that it feels well-made. It’s very solid, yeah absolutely.
Ben Freedman: Alright, thank you very much Magellan
Stiffany Young: Yeah, Thanks Magellan
Ben Freedman: Magellan!
Stiffany Young: Magellan!
Ben Freedman: That’s a different brand. It's a whole different product.
Stiffany Young: You saw that commercial too? Magellan?
Ben Freedman: Yeah but it's not for—I don’t think that's for GPS. I think it's for something else.
Stiffany Young: It’s funny.
Ben Freedman: Now, there’s other product I really like. This is Uniden’s Voyager VHF Marine Radio. Now, people tell me, ”Why do you need a marine radio?” I've got a cellphone, cellphone works okay at the lake. First of all, obviously cellphones can run out of batteries. You can get behind a mountain or behind a rock somewhere where you can't get a cellphone service.
Stiffany Young: Right.
Ben Freedman: Fabulous to have a marine radio that you could turn on the emergency channel and not only the marine—hear you if you get in trouble but you also have the ability to contact other boats if you get in trouble in these other boats around.
Stiffany Young: That actually, yeah, that’s a very good idea and I don’t know about you know, self service is very intermittent. I found anytime you go down around any mountains, I found that mine only works. Not just when I go behind a mountain, but sometimes I’ll be out here in the middle of the lake where I should be, I would think I would get a signal and I don’t get anything at all. Again, you mentioned not having the battery not charging or not being charged. In case of emergency, a must have I think for your kids especially if you have you know kids and I mean.
Ben Freedman: And this one is fantastic, it's so small. You can see how that is. That’s also completely waterproof, if you drop it in the water no problem—
Stiffany Young: And it floats. Yeah exactly and it floats right. Yeah, definitely a really nice unit to have incase of emergency.
Ben Freedman: It comes with rechargeable batteries and a cradle that you can pop it in so it's really easy to store.
Stiffany Young: Very nice, very nice.
Ben Freedman: So, that’s the—for today.
Stiffany Young: How much is this?
Ben Freedman: This is a 160 bucks.
Stiffany Young: 160 okay.
Ben Freedman: So, not the cheapest but works pretty well.
Stiffany Young: Right and what do you consider cheap when it's an emergency?
Ben Freedman: That’s right.
Stiffany Young: Right.
Ben Freedman: So, that’s the eXplorist XL from Magellan and the Uniden Voyager VHF Radio. And if you happen to have an extra 30 seconds, take a look of this
