Tamara Maslar: You’ve got a lemur than at less then you may not have a lot of choices
when it comes to decorating but we’ve got design ideas that will help you
make there place to fill like yours. And every idea is temporary so you
will get that deposit back.
Don’t you do think this is a great architectural detail; well I made it out of
plaster and kiddy litter. On a lot of apartment you really don’t have much
of an entrance; it’s a door into a living room so I am going to show you
how we can create that space. So you will be needing, two ten pound bags
of kitty litter, four building forms 8 inches in diameter, one form with 10
inches diameter, some insulation foam, a full size or queen size bed sheet,
duct tape, drop cloth, we will need a staple gun, staples, gloves, scissors,
will need a bag of plaster of paris with the bucket and a saw. So to begin
with we are going to set up a work bench and then I am going to put the 10
inches building core right on top here because what we are going to do is
saw a portion of that off. I’ve got about 6 inches here and this is going to
be the top and bottom and to the column. So if you want it wider you can
have it and if you want it thinner is quite up to you this is great work out.
Step two, you are going to take your building forms, the 8 inches in
diameter and you are going to stock them right on top of each other like so
and then we are going to take some duct tape and we are going to
carefully, surgically place it around. And then we are going to use our
insulation so we are going to take this and we are going to be rolling it and
we are going to be sticking it on the cone like this to create ridges and now
we are going to put really, really hard to staple in just like that and I really
recommend wearing gloves because I’ve done this without it and end up
with blister and not really a fun thing. Now again if you run a budget you
can always you stock around your house and you can save all of your
Christmas wrapping roll and instead of buying this insulation you can use
that for this ridges. Now, we are going to put the cup on the top of our
column just like that and then will going to staple gun the insulation
around this and we wanted to be nice and bulky in creating with it and it’s
actually start in that making and fill like what is the content can be.
So now are going to take our full or queen size flat sheets and we are
going to cut it into a four strips. Now this is a lot of fun so let’s say you
have any really bad day and you want to get out some aggression or you
get to rip up some sheet. Now I’m using a white color sheet because once
you are using the plaster, the sheet color was you through so having it
white would be a better option for you that if you unless you like yellow
daisies its up to you. Okay let’s go to the poster now, now right before you
do your plaster I would make sure that your whole areas completely set up
because plaster sets very, very quickly and you want to make sure you
have a nice warm day so that the plaster dries. You use two parts plaster to
one part water. This is of mushy consistency to this and alright I think
that’s pretty good and it doesn’t have lamps in and don’t even worry about
it. So now we are going to take one of the strips and we’re going to dip it
in the water and I like to put the whole thing in and mix it. Alright doesn’t
have look fun, so I’m going to take this whole sheet and we’re going to
smooth it out along the whole length of the column. Now, when I was in
Italy and was there because my husband is in the military we got to see a
lot of really old roman columns and you could see that the underneath the
plaster work were a lot of bricks and on top of those bricks they are
actually created this plaster effect and this ridges so that’s what we were
doing right here with the plaster so without the bricks but with cardboard
and we were creating the same exact thing.
And when it dries it’s going to look wonderful. The plaster of paris back
actually says let it dry for about 24 hours and I would definitely
recommend that but you can bring it inside probably after two or three
hours. Will it’s 24 hours later and we have a foam that is nice and dry so
we are going to set it up in our space and now I’m going to show you what
to do with that kitty litter I’m show while you are wondering. We are
going to place the kitty litter right inside the column and what that’s going
to do is to help that stand better incase anybody pumps into it so it is nice.
So, now we get to decorate it, we have some great organza here and it’s
kind of a cheer fabric and we are going to drape that around and what
that’s going to do is it’s going to help the way of the cone to shine
through. Now if you don’t have organza you can use a scarf, you can use
just regular fabric it’s up to you whatever we have around he house. So
what this piece does is they help to define the space and create a beautiful
focal point the in the room here. It will separate the entrance way from the
living area, a really great idea to have in this apartment. The best thing
about this is you can change the look of it depending on your mood. For
an autumn look is bang, playing. Its moving days so we are going to rid of
this out the door. As you can see we just remove the column so your
Leonard were even know that you are here. You have any left over plaster
on the floor or the ceiling you can always take wet rug and wipe it off.
That’s it I’m done here.
