I got started in the beauty industry many years ago. I fell in love with makeup and I studied theatrical makeup at Emerson College and I fell right into fashion. My first job was in Vogue advertising. It was an editorial advertising shoot for a designer and I lied and said that I did hair and makeup. I had to go buy tons and tons of hair products. I was so happy to know when a girl came she had very short hair, face to Mackie shows and Bob Mackie, he dressed Cher. He's the nicest man and he hired me to do makeup for his shows. So how you do a Bobbi Brown look with a Bob Mackie dress? So, it was a pretty face with really strong lashes. So it's really fun when things like that happen.
My daily beauty regimen is wake up, have a glass of water, a quick cappuccino, the New York Post, hop on the treadmill and then put a little tinted moisturizer on, eye cream, concealer, blush and mascara. Lip gloss comes later. For me, the most important beauty product and for most women is the corrector and the concealer because it makes you look not tired and hides a lot of what you did the night before.
I buy a lot of things at the Drug Store, mostly tools. I buy Vaseline. I buy Q-tips, sponges and nail polish, lots of funky colored nail polish. I do buy some wild “Ugly makeup” for fashion ladies. Bobbi Brown brand does really well on bad economies because we are brand that offers women things that they need and so we are much about problem solution as well as fun. I think that a woman never let's get of her colors or her concealer.
My new book which is 10-year update of teenage beauty is going to be called Beauty Role and it really shows that how things have changed in 10 years and bring a lot of the girls back. They were in the book and also to show girl’s black eyeliner. Girls would never wear 10 years ago. Girls love black eyeliner. And also on the book, we talk a lot about Facebook and a lot of online messaging, and how to do the right thing, and how to be careful, how you wear your makeup and take your pictures on Facebook and what pictures you’d put on because all employees including myself look at Facebook and Google any girl who’s going to work for me.
The industry, our industry, is definitely been moving younger. It's amazing to me when I need a model and she's 14 years old. I think that with the young starlet on the red carpet and in the movies. I think it's great to give girls opportunity, but it's important to be good role models and not bad role models. For a while, there was a lot of bad role model out for girls that were wearing over-sized glasses and big bags and looked like they're dressing in their mom’s clothes and one by one I think that’s really changing. I think it's about doing good and showing people how you can be better. And I think it's a big part of the economy and the Obama administration that really helps people help themselves.
