You really cannot beat fresh flowers from the garden to make the house look really beautiful. But it might not be the garden that gives you those flowers. It could be the florist. And you want those flowers to last in the vase more than just a couple of days.
There are some tips I can give to achieve this. The first thing is the stems to the flowers. Cut about two inches from the bottom of the stem before you put them in the vase. But with roses, there are another great tip I can give you is to plunge the stem into boiling water for about 15 seconds before you put in the vase and those roses will last a lot longer. But the problem really does stop with that vase of water. Now I know you are very keen to get the water in the vase to get the flowers in the vase but when you fill the vase with water from the tap, when the water enters the vase, it is dragging air into it as well, and that makes little air bubbles. You should leave the vase of water about an hour before you put your flowers in so all those air bubbles come out of the water left in and might rise at the stem of the flowers and clog it. But before you even think about filling the vase with water, a good little tip is to put a little drop of ordinary household bleach into the vase. It will do no harm to the flowers I promise you. What you will do, just switch it around as you fill the vase. What it will do, it will stop that water from going sour and going cloudy. And also the glass from going all misty as well.
Now I am going to leave this for an hour before I put my flowers in and you might find the florist flowers come with a little pack of flower food. Do not discard, use it, it is meant to be used. It gives you food for those flowers; it also gives you an antibacterial agent as well. To stop bacteria clogging the stems.
Another good tip when you do get your flowers into the vase eventually is to keep them well away from any fruit at all. Now we got a bowl of fruit in the kitchen here. Just one banana will produce a gas called ethylene and it is that gas that not only ripens the banana, will also ripen the flowers as well. So flowers and fruit never in the same room.
Well, the kitchen might not seem a good place to give you a tip on your loom but that is what I am going to do now. Grass seed, did you ever tried getting grass seed to germinate in summer. It could be seated there for weeks, it does take a long time and you think there must be something wrong with the grass seed, I did everything possible, prepared the ground well and the grass seeds just sit there. And the reason is grass seed does not just germinate because the temperature is high. It germinates with a sudden change in temperature. Which is why spring and autumn the best times of the year for sawing grass seeds are? It is getting that sudden change in temperature between the night and the day. But you can use a little trick. You can trick grass seed into germinating in the middle of summer. And the reason in the kitchen, because the trick is to use your freezer.
on my freezer you will find a box of grass seed, because that means that when I ever choose to saw it on a warm day, there is always that sudden change in temperature to get that grass seed germinating really quickly.
You may have noticed I got green thumbs and green fingers. That is because I was air on side shooting the tomatoes in the green house and you get the arbor green stain on your fingers. That is a job to remove is it not? There is a way of doing that save you all that scrubbing and that is to use a part of the plant that gave you that stain in the first place. I am talking about a green tomato. Sacrifices one of your green tomatoes and rub it furiously over those stains on your fingers. Now, what is happening now is the acid in that green tomato is loosening the dye that is on my skin and then using this odorly soup, and a bit of warm water, you can quickly and a protectively get rid of that green stain. You might notice when you do this, the soup goes green so you will know it is achieving its objective and there we have a nice clean hands.
Talking about clean hands. Maybe like me, intend to go into the garden for just a couple of minutes do about a weeding. But you were right there for an hour or two. And when you come and it is time go out for the evening and if you do not wear gardening gloves like I do not, you end up with dirt under your nails and you are scrubbing away to try and clean those nails of all that dirt. There is a way that you can stop that from happening and get into the habit. Before you go into the garden to do any gardening at all, simply use a bar of soup and rob your nails furiously over the soap. Fill those nails with soap and note fills on it looks a bit strange but I promise you, you can get into much weeding as you want. And when you come back in before you go out, just wash the soap at the nails and I promise you, your nails will actually be cleaner than when you went into the garden in the first place.
