Hi, I’m Amy Riolo. Today we’re making Almond Baklava and I’m going to show you how to make the syrup for the baklava, then we’ll make the almond filling for the baklava and we will assemble the baklava then we’ll cut it and bake it. After the baklava has done baking, we’ll remove it from the oven and we’ll cover it with our sweet syrup
The tools which we’ll need today are a food processor, a saucepan, a wooden spoon, a regular spoon, a spatula, a sharp knife, and an 11 x 17 inch baking pan.
The ingredients which we’ll need to make our almond baklava are for the syrup, one and a half cup sugar, two large strips of orange peel, the juice of one small orange and for the filling, we’ll need one and one half cup blanched almonds, half cup sugar, one teaspoon orange blossom water, and a one pound package of phyllo dough, which has been thawed for two hours at room temperature and one cup of unsalted butter which has been clarified.
Kitchen safety is always important. Today, we’re going to be working with hot ovens and hot syrup and sharp knives. So it’s really important to supervise children while we’re working in the kitchen.
Before we get started, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a cooking instructor, cookbook author, lecturer and culinary consultant based in the Washington, D.C. area. I specialize in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine and the rest of these, which we’re going to be making today are from my first cookbook called Arabian Delights: Recipes & Princely Entertaining Ideas from the Arabian Peninsula. So let’s get started.
