Mirella Amato: So already we’ve started getting some ideas of the kinds of foods that might match this different flavors and the question once again arises I’m shopping for beer and how can I tell which beer has wish malts right.
And first of all if you pour your beers its self evident so if you’re shopping for beers and you want to go for beers that you already know and you’re wondering what kind of malts are in there I’m going to give you a one gas or sort of all is in here.
Glen: I say the first one because it is very pale, it is very pale color. Pale, yellow, blonde.
Mirella Amato: That’s pretty straight forward, so that’s the old credit Pilsen I believe that we’re drinking and Pale Pilsen. This is a Niger Modelo Beer, this is a Niger Modelo I just want to have a look at that.
Glen: And much more ambary brownish color the comparison of the two.
Mirella Amato: For sure this is probably a combination of malts but, you can see that definitely some of this type of malt has been in there because you get that sort of caramel tone to it.
Glen: Definitely.
Mirella Amato: Okay ready. This is the black Irish porter once again.
Glen: Very dark with the—a nice chocolaty brown kind of mocha color at the head.
Mirella Amato: So you cannot see right away I mean I’ve been linings on with the malts and you can get an idea of what kind of malt is going into that beer very simple.
Now if you’re venturing into new beers generally if you know your styles you can tell what sort of malt would be in the beer for example this is the porter, all porters will be generally more or less this color.
All pale is in it will be more or less this color and otherwise if you’re venturing into a new styles sometime there are very liniments like for example this is Camerons, auburn, ale you can see by the color the label very purposely done.
Glen: There will be something like that.
Mirella Amato: Just about that color and here’s another one—this is the black coconut brown so the nut brown is actually somewhere between here and here but again they’ve given you a clear hint with a color of the label which is not always the case but already you know this is not brown, you can get an idea.
So for example something says pale, ale you know you’re heading towards us.
Glen: So they’re hinting at the color withdrawals or hinting at a flavor profile.
Mirella Amato: Exactly, exactly. So let’s explore those flavor profiles and see what sort of food matches we would use for each one.
