Welcome to MartialSkill, I am Sean. Today we are going to be talking about fanning and the presence the fan technique from the Seven Star Praying Mantis System.
So the idea of fanning is this, and we have single hand fanning techniques and we also, have double-hand double fanning techniques. We are going to play with both over the course, of videos, you will see. Today we are going to play with single hand fanning. We'll bring out Carlos here to help me demonstrate this.
So this is one of those things, that most people probably will never do. You are an average fighter and quick frankly even in your average Kung Fu practitioner or Praying Mantis practitioner, because it's something, that requires a lot of skill and a lot of practice and if you do it incorrectly or too slowly, you are going to get punched. So you have to practice it.
So the idea is, it's very economical to be able, to block two attacks with one hand. Certainly, it's going to block any attack. So if Carlos punches me, it doesn't matter which hand you to block, everybody gets that, right, that's a basic block. If he even follow what most people do, okay, with that cross, for me to be able to use one hand, leave this hand open rather than committing my second hand, okay. Not there's anything wrong with that. But I am in a better, offensive or countering position, if I have this hand free.
Okay, so that's the idea. So the way, to practice this, first practicing it and these have to be done with some kind of effort or force here, because you are not going to be like this and block somebody. This has to be pop, pop, okay what we called a dexterous force. So if you go 1, 2, 1, 2.
Now, the thing is that, it is not difficult to redirect somebody when he is at the extension of his punch. He is does not have a lot of power here, and he is easily moved, don't move, no matter what you do, okay, force me to -- okay, I am easily moving him, that's just a level stand.
So if this looks flicker, you understand that it doesn't take much and also the area that he is trying to hit on me is very small. So I only need to move him this much. So again practicing it 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, okay once you get comfortable with the , single hand fanning technique, keep this other hand in the center, don't get lazy like this and drop this hand, don't get cocky with it, right.
You want to have this other hand her, just in case, you need it, okay or you want to punch with it. Once you get with that, I am going to then take this into something else, which is a chain style, that we have that uses this technique to open, okay.
So the first part of this technique goes is 1, 2 but it doesn't stop there. What I going to do at that point is punch. Okay, so you can see that's, so again, it goes, 1, 2 punch and the timing on this is not 1, 2 oh! Punch. It goes punch.
So as this is the flattening, this is coming to the center. So all about timing and counter punch is all about timing. So this is a great counter and technique. Now punching above his head here, so doesn't have to worry about it. Okay, so as you build this up then, practice that.
So the second part of this chain style, is going to involve another punch up the center just in case, my first one didn't connect or I want to continue punching him. So we have 1, 2 okay, so 1, 2 so then, practice that.
So in a farther version of this is you are working yourself, we got - we have got 1, we have got 2 which this can be your jamming, covering or grabbing and then the third one is going to be Do Sao which is our hook punch. Not that it has to be something else, but in the chain style that I am teaching you, that's what happens in the third one. So, just one example, of it. So we have 1, 2 and then, from here I can collect his hand underneath because this hand is here, 3. Okay, So move this a little faster now, 1, 2, 3 okay, that's how that would go. Again 1, 2, 3 it flows very nicely, very tough to defend against.
So we are going to break this down now just by myself to show you this chain style. You should learn this by yourself, just practicing it in the air before, you are working on it with your partner, so that way you understand the motion. So slowly now, it starts hands in the center and you are going to practice this with the fanning technique from the standing position. So we are not going to use any forward right away. We are going to block and block and so, the way, this looks from the front, it is block, block, block, block, okay, so it's not happening with this. It's covering and this elbow should be staying in the same place. You don't want to go like this, okay you want use to use very little motion here. Block, block, like an outside block which is up against side block, so 1, 2, 1, 2,1,2, 3 now I am going to use this with a hook with the crust in punch, so it goes 1, 2, 3 okay, from side, same thing 1, 2, 3 that step comes, with this punch.
So as I go block, block, I am collecting this hand. I turn this outside lock and into a hook to collect his hand and the wrist I am going to drive this punch, right from here, as I take him this step, punch.
The second technique is simply covering or grabbing and firing with other punch to the center. So punch or punch. The last one is I can either collect it over the top or from underneath as I go Do Sao, foot can be, whatever you want. It can be a medium stance, I am going to show with the, the stance to show that driving the final punch not really important here, the hand is what we are focusing on. So again, we go 1, 2, 3. Again we'll fast it now, 1, 2, 3.
