Hi! I am Sherry Tyra the assistance designer of HGTV's Design to Sell and owner of Custom Home Interior Creations. Today we are doing No-sew window treatment. Now that we have the fabric on the batten, we want to learn how to add the ribbon trim, which also is practical with this type of window treatment because it allows you to open and close the window treatment.
To determine the length of the ribbon we will come over here and we are going to measure how far down you want your window treatment to hang. It can really hang any length you want, higher, lower, whatever. To determine the length and times that by two, so this is 20 inches that will be 40 inches but then we are going to add 3 inches to that, because the ribbon is going to overlap on the top of that batten. So we will measure that almost 20 inches times two, which is 40 inches and add 3 inches.
Now that we have our ribbon cut to size we are going to add some Velcro to the end of the ribbon. If we are making this window treatment, if you are making this window treatment your measurement with 43 inches, cut that in half. So you have a piece of ribbon hanging behind the window treatment and in front of the window treatment.
If you are doing this one you are going to want to add Velcro because you will make this a practical ribbon where you can drop the window treatment. So what we will do, is we will cut our Velcro and I usually like to use the loop side rather then the fuzzy side on the ribbon just because it's a little flatter and little smoother.
Another tip is if you are going to buy Velcro, buy the type that has the stickiness on the back of it. Even though we are using the fusible tape, the iron on tape to attached it to the ribbon, the stickiness on the Velcro gives you that double stick and the Velcro is not going to be pulling off your ribbon as easily if you are opening and closing it.
So take your Velcro, measure it the same width as your ribbon or just a little bit less, and cut it. And now what we will do is we will take the backing up the Velcro, take your fusible tape of the same width, attach it to the back of the Velcro and you have the stickiness, so it should hold this fusible tape very nicely for you. Trim off any access and then you will iron this on the ribbon side to attach it to your ribbon. Very easy again, not a stitch of sewing. Great!
Now that we have attached the Velcro to the ribbon, I am going to show you a little trick to keep your ribbon from fraying. The Velcro is on your ribbon, you will trim off any access little fray marks on your ribbon and then take this handy dandy little tool here which is a no-fray liquid. Again, you can buy it at sewing stores, craft stores and you just go over the edge of your ribbon, just kind of squirt a little bit of that liquid on it and when that dries your ribbon would no longer fray it dries clear, clean, you don't even see it. Perfect little tip.
Now we are going to determine where we want the ribbons on the window treatment. And I like they come in -- maybe 8 to 10 inches from the edge. If you are coming any farther your window treatments aren't going to lay quite as nicely.
So about 8 to 10 inches from the edge of your batten and we are going to take a Velcro. Now this time, we are taking the fuzzy side because the ribbon will be attaching to this Velcro on your batten. So we will take the fuzzy side, just cut, we don't have to be too specific, just cut a nice good size piece and if you are having your ribbon mount here on your window treatment, that's where you are going to put your Velcro, right in the middle of that. We will peel the sticky backing off, the protective backing. You can measure, figure out where you want it, same size on both sides. Stick it on your batten. Hit with a couple of staples again, just pound those in and you are set to go. Do it on the other side and then we attach the ribbons.
Now once you have your Velcro on your batten, you will take your ribbon, not the side with the Velcro, the other side and you will line it up right in the middle of that Velcro that you have put on the batten, and put two staples in it. One is not sufficient because that will make the ribbon kind of move and twist, two will hold it nicely into place. Again, hit it with your hammer and you are all set to go.
Now that we have the ribbon and the Velcro on the batten, the next step is to roll it up and hang it on the window.
