Hi! I'm Sherry Tyra, Assistant Designer for HGTV's Designed to Sell and owner of Custom Home Interior Creations. Now that we've determined the width of your batten, we're going to decide how large we need to make the fabric and figure out the formula for cutting your fabric.
Once you have your width of your batten, take that measurement and add three inches to it for side seam allowances. That will be the width of your fabric. To determine the length of your fabric, you will take the inside measurement of your window for the inside mount. This is now the inside mount. The inside measurement of your window and you are going to allow three inches extra for seam allowances which will be the overlap on the batten on the top and the hem.
For outside mount, you will take the lengths of your window including your window frame. Now standard window frames are two-and-a-half inches, but depending on what type of moldings you have that may vary. So you take the length of the window opening including the frame and then you add five-and-a-half inches for your overlap allowance on your batten and your hem.
A simple and easy way to mark your fabric is with the fabric marker. This one here is great, because there is a disappearing ink side and a Mark-B-Gone side. The Mark-B-Gone side, you just have to touch it up with a little bit of water and it disappears. The disappearing ink side disappears on its own. If you're using the Mark-B-Gone side of the marker, just to make sure that the fabric you're using is not going to be affected of its touch with a little bit of water. So you can mark your fabric and then use your scissors to go ahead and cut the size that you need.
Now that we've determined the size of our fabric, I am going to show an easy way to finish off the raw edges.
