Medical Marijuana for Autism
Dr. Travis Stork: Treating children with autism can mean some trials and certainly many tribulations but when it became clear that Mieko’s autistic son was literally starving himself to death, she made a life changing decision to save him.
Mieko: My 10-year-old son Joey was diagnosed with severe autism at 16 months. By five years old Joey has started displaying aggression and behavioral problems at school. It seemed that every doctor that Joey and I would see, their answer was another medication. Since then Joey has been on 13 different medications and all 13 medications have shown to be very toxic and very damaging just for his body.
Dr. Rebecca Hedrick: Because of his autism, we were very particular about the foods he would eat and would literally starving to death in front of our eyes.
Mieko: Joey was 10-years-old and 46 pounds. As a mother, I could not just sit there and watch my son die.
Dr. Rebecca Hedrick: When Mieko came to me in desperation, we tried several different medications for Joey to gain weight. Nothing was working. She brought to my attention some research on autism and medical marijuana. And although I was very hesitant to give it a try, the results are very promising. And so at that point when I made the recommendation to use it, I told her if it were my son I would do it.
Mieko: We chose the one food that we thought that we could place the marijuana and it just happened to be brownies. And Joey receives brownies once every two to three days. Now you're laughing. Before the medical marijuana he would never sit here and let me do anything like this. This is truly an awakening, this was the son that I lost at 16 months and marijuana has helped to bring him back.
