Eils Hewitt: Toddlers would make some smiley pose. I just start with the questions from the mailbag that Su Laurent. The baby channel president Doctor is going to talk with today. So thanks very much for coming in.
Su Laurent: Thank you Eils.
Eils Hewitt: These are in the mail bag. First question here a mom is worried to have her baby girl keeps holding her breath, when she is particularly upset, and may be lot of question because husband probably he is like even when he was a baby he used to go to a tantrum and then just hold his breath.
Su Laurent: It is a quite common problem and these breath holders these are breath holding attacks, and the important thing is that would tricked by something so a child gets upset they have hurt themselves even just very mildly or they just get cross they want something and all getting it and then they cry and cry, cry and suddenly they hold their breath they can go really very bright pink in the face and purple and blue and usually they were quite quickly regain their breath and then I stop breathing again. There are a few very occasional ones who actually go to rather nasty white color and then just drop to the floor.
Eils Hewitt: They are different group.
Su Laurent: They are different group yes. And those actually children have a condition that’s a separate conditions called reflux and not as Synagis, which is something popped with when all are going to do with today but that is the extreme end if your life.
Eils Hewitt: So most of the time is it presentation seeking.
Su Laurent: And of the time it is, and its crying its at that stage of life when a toddler Is testing the boundaries, is just saying how far can I go before I get what I want , or will I actually can carryout like this for ever, never get what it is that I have been told like on have and its quite and important as a parent to recognize that they part of toddler once is boundaries, so that if you just let them scream, scream, scream the eventually you give in there always going to push that boundary back further and further but if you decided most completely in appropriate keep punching up your baby sister. And you all are going to give in then eventually they learn less doesn’t matter even if I have hold my breath I am not going to actually get what I want some childs will not do this anymore.
Eils Hewitt: so every time now probably just grow after?
Su Laurent: Exactly.
Eils Hewitt: Good as myself I have been really worrying that--?
Su Laurent: It is worrying exactly.
Eils Hewitt: Another moms concern she has ventouse delivery and she is concerned weather it will damage the babies head?
Su Laurent: This is the very good question, a little parents who are worried about that the birth is the most dramatic time of our whole life usually, that is in our heads, our heads made to come out and be squashed and come out through the birth canal. They are made to be quite sort of moldable and that’s why babies on the first day of life often look pretty useless faces surprises exactly all squished up and if their kind of born to lots and have an great kind of lump as well on the head. But the most remarkable thing is by the next day all that in stuff sort to self out and the head becomes much rounder again and the answer is in simple with no they wont use just not damage the babies head or brain and that’s she be in show in to be were back to using it’s a kind of sort a big face of using forceps deliveries but the fact we are using more ventouse deliveries again because actually I think in some ways easier to use this what I understand and actually its not harmful to the babies head.
Eils Hewitt: So people that might not know the difference between ventouse and forceps you want to explain what instruments that I can have.
Su Laurent: The ventouse is like a cap like a some suction cap but is applied to the babys head and then suction applied a long, a long cube so that it sticks on just by using suction like as in vacuum cleaner then what is stuck on here and then just pull you just dip firmly and gently pull with the baby help ease the baby through the birth canal so babies will comes out how they want to come up providing you put the long tubes on the right area. But in the forceps you have to kind of put a blade round one side of the babies face and round all the out sides of the babies face and they lock the blades together and then pull like that.
Eils Hewitt: They are like a salad service, well let’s go to next question, and the ladies got a new born baby and they wanting to plan the you know family holiday. So they are wondering what age is exact to take a baby you want to plan.
Su Laurent: Any age is the answer. And as a good example when my first was born I was living in American and my sister timed her wedding in England, so that we could come back with the baby, so obviously we didn’t know when the going to be bowel early later what ever, we have get a pass port for him. Mean while second I got the passport which is all very quick, we were nervous, I think he was about 2 weeks from we have traveled, and I find that easy when they are about 2 weeks, that you pat them to sleeping and the most important things if you are taking a long go fly is to look fascinate then you put the right place in the plane to be.
Eils Hewitt: It sort of back to neck and it’ll move exactly to front.
Su Laurent: Exactly.
Eils Hewitt: I have seen it. Is it true that it sounds the aero plane descendens that hearing .
Su Laurent: That’s right and what I do always say you got have your baby strap to you anyway when you are going up and going you are down in the flight. You don’t have them in the basement at that point. So trying having one strap to you and be feeding at the same time.
Eils Hewitt: Right so they sucking replace helps, right.
Su Laurent: So the sucking clears the air in the ears as they go.
Eils Hewitt: Right good tip, another one here a 6 months old baby has a Port wine stain on her cheek cant these ever be removed. So she is not just disfigured for life.
Su Laurent: Well a Port wine stain as I am sure this mom or dad knows is a permanent birth mark, but that nowadays there is Laser treatment available and in fact it seems to be the earlier you start the better, so its worth asking for a referral to a specialist for birth marks to find out whether Laser treatment would be suitable for this baby and also how soon to start it.
Eils Hewitt: Oh it’s worth nice bit of hope there. And another one with a 7 week old baby he was a hernia doesn’t say it were but probably he will need an operation to fix it and the parents are concerned is it safe to put a baby under general anesthetic.
Su Laurent: Okay well we can probably guess this going to be what we call inguinal hernia which is done to the growing because those are the once that you need to correct usually the other once like umbilical hernia these are bulgy tummy button they correct themselves. So inguinal hernia is one way it goes down in to that the path in to the scrotal and the bit of intestine can’t get stuck down there which is why it needs correction. And if a baby needs an operation almost it’s a very important they have the operation because if you delay at for any reason you could land up with the hernia getting stuck. So is not such as safe would yes I mean what has to be done is and need to specialist in doing children should give the anesthetic but thousands and thousands of children and tiny baby have anesthetics, in its through out the world every day they aren’t any problem at all. A tiny risk to every anesthetic provided you are in the right hands, but somebody who does these a lot very, very little risk.
Eils Hewitt: Yeah I can understand the concern for the parents basically the say baby is if it’s a young baby with move yet whether it’s allergic child,
Su Laurent: Exactly, which is why always say to parents that there are minor things that don’t need correcting like tongue ties all things all things are going to wait, wait in till they are a little bit elder. But if it is thing like hernias which is not an immediate emergency but it can become in emergency its better to get it done rather than hanging around.
Eils Hewitt: Well with the skin in the been in growing area, and I have got a question here my 4 year old boy wants to playing his villi, I am seeing very embracing in front of friends she let him carry on or pretend I don’t notice..
Su Laurent: Boys play with villi’s that is part of being a boy and I remember a mother saying to me once in a clinic the upper palate car member what do you want publically discussing how little boy said you know come to think my husbands always put his hands in his pockets as well and it is very, very common for boys to play with villi’s, and I think probably you’ll find the more attention you draw to it the more likely they are all to carry and leave it. So you can you say to him why don’t you just do that in your bedroom or do that in the bath room, but don’t make a big thing that keep going don’t keep telling on and all about it and because the more you go about it the more they will do it.
Eils Hewitt: Right okay, so they just do quickly with the hand every time.
Su Laurent: No because you are don’t just go, and it’s such a natural thing and if you just ignore after a while it just go away.
Eils Hewitt: Yeah, and it just go away and I suppose if one individual on there and it will just speed different times.
Su Laurent: Exactly different.
Eils Hewitt: And the last question here, nits my two girls pick up nits in the nursery what is the best way to deal with this nasty creature?
Su Laurent: Nits, I mean they around all the time up at the moment I mean your, little one is old enough yet to experience nits but I do warn you prepare yourself and I did when I was a kid I don’t remember nits around the whole time I mean left to the end from coming home from school.
Eils Hewitt: Me and my brother yet the.
Su Laurent: The answer and just the pavement speak different at different policies, there is a treatment for nits and there is a special stuff you can just put shampoo in to the hair and then leave over night and shampoo out and there are different sorts of nit treatment I mean malathion is one of them, the reason I am not going to list them is because you have to have use the one which is being advised at the time they tend to be so cycled around, because they tend to use one sort as a and a blitz of one sort and then get back rest and try another sort. But probably the most important thing is to when you know the nits around at school is to keep combing your childs head and checking for nits, if you get the adults out and they haven’t got time to lay eggs, once you got the eggs then you have to treat but If you just get one or two adults and you get rid of them and comb them out then when don’t have times to lay eggs if you got eggs the other thing often using the special treatment is to put lots of conditioner in your childs hair and then to comb through the hair because if the hair is slippery and combing out all the little bit legs you get rid of them and you keep doing on regular basis they wouldn’t come back.
Eils Hewitt: That the really good advise that’s for me. Because I had really, really tired and the combs they use nit combs it’s so tired. I mess screwing me agony like no one show they got you know lots of condition
.
Su Laurent: A lots of conditioners.
Eils Hewitt: So a lots of conditioner helps really makes it easy.
Su Laurent: Yes exactly.
Eils Hewitt: Thanks you very much for clearing up those questions for us today.
Su Laurent: Great pleasure.
