Osteoporosis can be treated and even prevented with medication.
A group of medications called Bisphosphonates are often used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates include alendronate which is marketed as Fosamax and Risedronate sold under the name Actonel. Bisphosphonates work by entering the body and binding to the cement like substance in bones, Hydroxy Apatite. In doing so, the medication interferes with the activity of bone destroying osteoclass.
By blocking osteoclass, bone building cells known as osteoblast have an opportunity to play catch up, filling in more holes that are being made. Both Alendronate and Risedronate are proof to treat and prevent osteoporosis in post menopausal women. And the Alendronate can also be prescribed for men.
Bisphosphonates can also treat osteoporosis that arises from taking corticosteroid medications.
