Have you ever wondered what top five things you should keep in stock in your medicine cabinet? Have you ever taken expired medicine because that was the only thing around? Doctor Kingstone knows what it takes to make sure your medicine cabinet gets a clean built out health.
Dr.Kingstone: I recommend to my patients that they follow the three Rs of medicine cabinet safety: read, remove, restock. Patients should always relabel to ensure that they are taking the right medication for the right medical problem at the correct proper doses. Just like food, medication also has an expiration date on it if you can’t find that date, don’t take the medication.
Expired medication is not garbage, you do not throw it into the trash, it is not safe to do so. Take it to your pharmacist so that the pharmacist can safely dispose of it. When we are stocking medicine in cabinets I usually advise my patients to obtain something that relives pain fever that’s most commonly used.
I usually recommend that they obtain a Acetaminophen based medication like Tylenol because it's safe, it's effective, it rarely reacts adversely with other medication that they might be taking. I also advise them to check with their pharmacist and of course meet their doctor first.
The top five over the counter products recommend to keep in a medicine cabinet are an antibiotic ointment or cream for rashes or scrapes, a digital or a mercury thermometer to properly asses body temperature during a fever, an acetaminophen based medicine for pain release such as Tylenol, a package of bandages. Make sure that you stock different sizes and shapes of bandages to accommodate various cuts and scrapes, an allergy medication antihistimin; particularly if you are prone to dust, dander or outside allergies. When it comes to health in the home the medicine cabinet is usually the first place we turn to for remedies and release. So it is up to you to make sure as you and your family take the right product in the safest possible way.
