Melanomas of the Eye

Kerrin: My name is Kerrin. I'm from Michigan. Is there such thing as melanoma of the eyes and if so, how can I prevent from getting it?

Mary Migneco: Kerrin, melanomas of the eye are very rare but it can be devastating to your vision. The two most common locations in the eye for a melanoma would be on the iris, which is the colored portion of your eye that you can actually see. The second location would be the choroid, which is on the back of the eye and you wouldn't be able to be see, actually visualize that.

They are caused just like skin melanomas by exposure to UV light, so it's important to wear sun glasses or a hat when you go outside. Along with your any annual eye examinations, if you do notice a change in the color of your eyes, you need to make an appointment with your eye doctor.
