Memorizing The Fretboard

Hey guys welcome to the Guitar Tricks Channel Neal Walter your host. We got another
lesson for you this week and the tip of the week is sliding into notes. This is really handy
with lead playing check it out if you’re doing this little riff right here for example but it
sounds really cool if you slide into it and slide out of it. It adds a little more excitement
check it out.
On our lesson of the week memorizing the fret board this thing right here where all your
fingers go. When I learn stuff I like to take it by the simplest parts first so I’m going to
give you some really easy memory tips. Basically everything from here to here is
repeated from here to here and these notes we’ll be the same as the ones from here so you
can forget about all this part.
Also you’ve got 2 strings that are the same. The E and E’s whatever you learn on this
string is going to be the same on this string so that’s get through to that one. What I
would tell you to do is focus on the lower 2 strings the E and the A because most of the
chords you play are going to be rooted on those notes anyway. Now the best way to find
your place on the fret board is with fret markers isn’t that what they’re there for. Their
nice and easy, they’re simple notes to remember on the E string you have the GAB and
on the A string you have the C, D, and E.
Now what I would recommend is memorizing the notes on the E and A string first you
can start with these markers if you like because this is where most chords the root is
based on these strings. Now for the next strings the D and G string I like to use an Octave
which is basically skipping a string and skipping a fret you know if you’re playing a
power chord like this it took out that note if you have an octave which means that these
two notes are the same. This one is just an octave higher.
So if you know the notes on the EA string are and you’re up on the D strings you’re like
what’s this note you through an octave down and go like oh that’s a B and then the same
thing on the G string like what’s this note threw an octave down here like oh that’s a B
and that way you’ve covered all 4 strings. Now the only one left is the odd ball, the B. So
what I like to do to remember on the B with notes are is you know the tuning trick when
you press down with this string between the E, well that tells you that this is an E.
So all the notes that you learned on the E string are going to apply from this part forward
you got E, F, G, A and B. And from here on up everything repeats. Now this exercise
isn’t designed to tell you all the notes in the fret board with it right away but what it is
designed to do is to give you an anchor and a reference point so that you can start moving
around quickly in the fret board and know where you are and then using these chips you
can like add in and fill in the spots in between as you go along and this will be the good
anchor to refer back to always so hopefully this helps.
