Suzy Willemssen: Hi! I'm Suzy Willemssen. I'm a Travel Ball and high school softball coach. We're going over some basic skills that you want to have regarding our fastpitch softball. We've done some talking about physical skills and I want to make sure that you also explore mental training, mental toughness. It is so important and that it separates the good players and the great players. All great players, of course, are going to have the physical skills, what it makes them above and beyond their counter parts is their mental toughness. There are some great resources, so just look at anything written by Adam Rabesa he had heads of baseball, Jeff Johnson has some wonderful material out there, also Brian Kane. These folks do with mental training, things to help what the greats do. They come up with routines to help them, you have a puree at that and how you can flush that get yourself back to centre you're your next step that'll be predictive.
We've talked about analogies about a brick and I'll have a player she might make a have a poor swing, have a poor and bad and she carries that around her, her step bat or you maybe even in the next pitch as if it's a brick. I'll say, Hey, Suzy, okay make sure you got that brick, hold that in your hand; now at this next pitch, see if you can hold that brick in your hand and I have a predictive swing as well, pretty hard to do. So a lot times using like brick analogy since those nature that helps the player understand needing to get routines, needing to get some type of training, mental toughness, but again to help them. To complete and help them survive the frustration that occurs with this game. It's a marvelous game, it's where your individual skills worked you put into it, it can be on display, but also and the team setting where you learn valuable things such as cooperation, share and working with other. So there are not too many sports where what you do as far as your effort and you're training individually can be in such marvelous arena with the team setting as well.
You want to be mentally tough, you want to be able get handle those frustrations or stresses, so again those are just three people to check out, in addition to mental toughness to look into some visual training. If you can't see the ball and you're not going to be able to hit the ball, you're not going to be able to feel the ball. I know you've heard stories about the Olympic athletes and what they were doing to help train their eyes, particularly when they are about to play with the tennis ball and numbers on that tennis ball and using that. So there's marvelous things out there those things, mental training, and visual training will take you to the next level. Alright, you don't want to be good, you want to be great. So go forth, enjoy the greatest game that there is fastpitch softball. I never forget the joys in the journey.
