Mercedes Benz SplitView Tech Review
Okay what’s the biggest problem with having a big old LCD with lots of stuff on it in the
front of the car? Obviously, distraction. But here’s a really cool technology that kind of
answers the issue. It’s called Split View from Mercedes, co-developed with Robert
Bosch. I'm sitting here and looking at the navigation screen on the driver’s side. Without
touching a thing, check this out. From the passenger side, I'm watching a music video.
Same monitor with a refractive technology that sends a different image at different
viewing angles. That’s pretty cool. It allows the driver to have full access to navigation
and other settings on the car. I can go anywhere, just like a normal command system and
it doesn’t disturb what the passenger sees at all. It’s kind of like magic. Now the
passenger has access basically to just the entertainment features, they can't go do their
own separate NAV screen for example or dive into other vehicle menu. So it’s a little
limited in that way, but not in a practical sense.
To make this work, the passenger gets a wireless remote. Kind of like a media remote
that let’s them do their thing while the driver controls the head unit using the standard
command interface buttons and consul right here. And of course the driver can hear the
audio coming off of that presentation where the media is, or the passenger can go on their
own zone with their own wireless headphone. So all kinds of flexibility about sharing or
not, what’s going on in that head unit but keeping the distraction down. This is going to
be an ala carte option available now in Mercedes vehicle but just a few of them, the S
class and the CL coupe. Its $775.00 on top of the advanced 10 unit that those cars have
already had.
