Hello everyone and thank you for tuning in to Inside Geek Canada. My name is Evan Thies.
Today is a website feature and I am going to be talking about microblogging platform that I use called Twitter. Now, I am sure that some of you have heard of it and probably a lot have even used it. But, I am going to talk about why I use it, what I think that benefits are and basically, how you get signed up and why this is a good social network to take part in.
So I am just going to go straight to the computer here and show you some of the website.
So now, I am on the Twitter main page before anyone signed in. So now, I want to talk about basically what Twitter is. Twitter can basically be called by these two things, a presence application and a blogging application. And, this is basically called microblogging. And what that means is that if you think of a typical blog, you post an article that can be of any length. It can be about anything. They call it micro because every post that you make has to be less than 140 characters. So basically, it is a quick update on what you are doing, what is new with you, what is new on the web, something cool that you discovered, the webs that you have discovered, something that you want to tell a bunch of people, etc, etc.
Now, a tour to the applet called “Followers” or people that you follow. So basically, if there is someone that you identify as your friend or somebody that you want to see their updates, you click the follow button and it sends you where you will get all their updates into your account so you can check what they are doing. And, this could be very valuable if there is a certain website to tell Twitter and you want to know what they are always doing. It is kind of like a mini RSS feed in the sense because you can aggregate all of your content together. It is also great to post your content on here. Now, this is not for everyone because not everyone is going to want to have to update all the time and we are seeing what they are doing. And, you don’t have to update all the time but people are going to expect that you update quite often on Twitter because that is the whole point of it. And if they are following you, they are definitely going to expect that.
Now, the whole reason that someone will follow you is to get your updates your information that you are providing. But I also think that Twitter has a very powerful marketing tool. Now, in order for it to be powerful, you have to also participate in the community and be replying and following people as well as doing decent Tweets that we call them, those are basically what you post. They are called Tweets I guess just because of the Twitter. And the great thing is if you have quite a few followers or get a few followers, you can use this as a marketing tool because you can get a message to a mass amount of people in a really short amount of time. And, a lot of these people check the Twitter quite often. So you could all of the sudden have hundreds, if not, thousands of people listening to you and all of the sudden, “Boom!” on tweet goes out and they all have a link or a blog post or some information or if you want to float on something, you can post and recommend them to go to a link and you can get quite a few hitch there or something like that and this can be used as a marketing tool in that sense.
So, I have a few tabs opened here. I am going to take a look at my account here. Now, let us just refresh this page and you will see a bunch of new tweets come in. Now basically, these are all the people that I am following here so you can see that I just read their updates and see what they are talking about.
Replies is an interesting feature. Even if you are not a friend of somebody but you hear an interesting tweet, you can respond to them. It is public so you have to be careful that you are not saying anything personal. But, you can just put @ and then their username and that goes directly to them as a reply. And also, that is called direct messa
