Microsoft OneApp to Bring Apps to Feature Phones

Justin: Microsoft released an application that allows feature phones to run popular mobile applications. Feature phones or cellphones that can run applications but don’t have as many capabilities as smart phones, Microsoft wants to introduce OneApp to markets where smart phones are as popular as feature phones. Tim: Analysts in Microsoft estimate that today there is many as 2 billion in use. These phones are also especially popular in emerging markets. Justin: The demo displayed shows applications such as Microsoft Messenger, Twitter, and Facebook. The Facebook application comes in at the slim 13 kilobytes and the OneApp platform takes only around 150 kilobytes Tim: And here we are, we’re in Facebook running in OneApp and it’s showing you all of the Facebook functionality that you can get too on the PC. Justin: OneApp also includes a cloud service so users don’t have to store applications directly to their phone. Reporting from Boston, I’m Justin Meissinger, IDG News Service.
