From Michigan, over 49% of pre-hurricane residents of New Orleans showed symptoms of an anxiety or mood disorder in the months after Hurricane Katrina struck. Most also reported experiencing at least one hurricane-related stressor. Slow government response was cited as a factor which contributed to abnormally high mental illness rates when compared to similar studies conducted after other natural disasters.
From Waterloo, males with a twin sister could be up to ten times more likely than other men to develop anorexia. While most men are at significantly lower risk for anorexia than their female counterparts, this does not hold true for men with a twin sister. The result points to a potential in-utero risk factor for anorexia in pregnancies involving a female child.
And finally from California, a commonly-prescribed drug for Type 2 diabetes could be interfering with new bone formation. Rosiglitazone, also known as Avandia, seems to change the balance of bone-destroying and bone-forming cells in rodents. Earlier this year, the drug was also linked to an increased rate of heart failure.
