Jennifer Matthews: Bill Burton has a house full of kids, and until recently, he also had a head full of worry.
Bill Burton: My grandfather died of colon cancer, and his brother died of colon cancer.
Jennifer Matthews: With a strong family history, Bill knew it was time for a colonoscopy.
Bill Burton: My wife encouraged me to get serious about it, and my doctor did too.
Jennifer Matthews: But instead of the standard test, Bill had magnification endoscopy -- a new procedure that doctor Robert Carroll uses to magnify the colon 70 times that of standard colonoscopies.
Dr. Robert Carroll: The magnification chromo endoscopy part of the study tells you something about future risk and future surveillance.
Jennifer Matthews: The high resolution shows microscopic changes.
The benign spots simply show how high -- or low --a patient's risk is for colon cancer.
Dr. Robert Carroll: Rather than waiting for polyps and cancer to develop, we can intervene with drugs and dietary therapy.
Jennifer Matthews: Bill's exam showed just one tiny lesion, which means his risk is low, despite his family history.
Bill Burton: I certainly have great peace of mind, knowing a cloud has been lifted or that I've been given a clean bill of health here on something that was in the back of my mind.
